Tom Hanks has insisted that nepo babies have got to have ‘a drive’ to succeed.
The 66-year-old actor is father to sons Chet, 32, and Truman, 27 with wife Rita Wilson as well as Colin, 45, and Elizabeth, 40, from his former marriage to Samantha Lewes- all of whom work in the field of entertainment.
And after recently claiming that showbiz was the ‘family business’, he explained to Entertainment Tonight on Monday that while he may have been able to get them into the industry, they have had to work to make things ‘stick.’
This comes after he posed with son Truman on the red carpet while plugging his movie A Man Called Otto. Wife Rita produced and Truman has a role.
Nepo talk: Tom Hanks has insisted that nepo babies have got to have ‘a drive’ to succeed. Seen with wife Rita and son Truman this week at the Man Called Otto premiere
He said: ‘The shoe industry is a family business. The car industry is a family business. I think my kids are all like Renaissance artists, you know? [They] are good at whatever they choose to be. But the question here is, can you make it stick?’
And then he said passion, drive, talent, and luck really are the ingredients needed.
‘You’ve got to have a passion, you’ve got to have a drive. And yeah, our household has existed in the company town that is Los Angeles. Success is a combination of talent, perseverance, drive, and no small amount of luck.’
The Cast Away star went on to add that when it was suggested that one of his sons play the younger version of his character in a movie, it ‘made sense’ but the decision was all down to the little one.

‘But the final analysis is the person has to show up on the day and hit the marks and tell the truth. Only he can make that decision. It was totally up to him.’
On Tuesday he again told Today that it was not his idea to cast Truman for a role in his new movie.
His new movie: Hanks seen in A Man Called Otto with Mariana Treviano
‘Truman, who is either burdened or blessed by resembling myself at the same age as him, and Marc Forster, our fabulous director, just says, “You know what? It’s always so fake to get somebody else to come in and play you, ‘cause they never look right. Could maybe Truman do this?”‘ he told Savannah Guthrie on TODAY in an interview that aired January 10.
He said he didn’t watch his son in action.
‘I have to be occupied only with what I’m doing as old Otto, but then young Otto was there,’ he said. ‘But at the same time, I remember driving him in the carpool when he was 7 years old. So, you know, that crosses your mind.’
Truman has a credit as German rider in his dad’s 2020 film News of the World.
His mom is Rita Wilson.
Another son: Tom and Rita are also parents of Chet, 32
Hanks said he was nervous for Truman taking the part, but knew he had to confront the task at hand on his own.
He also talked about being known as Mr Nice Guy.
‘I wish I had lived a life where people would truly fear me. But I’ve tried to come in, like, angry. I don’t know, I just make everybody laugh,’ he added.
He also said he is now into meditation, which he learned about from Jerry Seinfeld.
‘He goes, “No, you’ve got to. I’ve been doing it since college,”‘ he said while doing his Seinfeld impression. ‘He put me together with his teacher, and it’s an odd, easy, life-changing thing. And should everybody do it? Sure, why not?’
