An Undead Match is a gameplay mode in Dark Souls III. They are special online duels where players battle each other to the death, either in teams or alone.

Accessing an Undead Match[]

To access an Undead Match, one must acquire the Champion's Bones either by defeating the Champion's Gravetender and Gravetender Greatwolf or by completing Amnesiac Lapp's questline, and then burn them in the Firelink Shrine bonfire. After this is done, that character will be able to access Undead Matches at any point by resting at the Firelink Shrine bonfire. In addition, it will become impossible to acquire any more copies of the Champion's Bones, but Undead Matches will be accessible even if the player enters a new NG cycle.

Overview[]

Undead Matches are special online encounters where players either team up and work together in order to defeat an opposing team, or take part in a free-for-all battle royale where the last player standing emerges victorious.

Each match is comprised of two to six players. Players are either pitted against each other in a free-for-all battle, or divided into two teams of equal size.

All participants appear as phantoms, matching whatever kind of phantom their active covenant has. For example, a Blade of the Darkmoon will appear as a blue phantom, while a Warrior of Sunlight will appear as a golden phantom. Equipping Way of Blue or no covenant will make the character take on the appearance of a host.[citation needed]

These online battles are similar to those found in previous games, with the exception that there are no special arenas designed specifically for them this time around, and instead they take place in normal locations visited during the main game, such as the Kiln of the First Flame and Archdragon Peak.

Winning multiple times will reward the player with an insignia next to their name which represents the amount of victories they have accumulated on that character. There are two insignias, one for free-for-all and one for team fights. No items or souls are awarded during or after an Undead Match. Similarly, souls won't be lost nor will hollowing increase if the player dies within an Undead Match, although consumed items will not be restored, and broken equipment will not be repaired.
