USA TODAY analyzed and organized millions of backyard bird observations collected from Nov. 1 to April 30 since 2011 as part of Project FeederWatch, a citizen science program. The information helps researchers track changes in bird populations, as well as identify potential threats such as disease outbreaks or habitat loss. The bird sightings were compiled to produce the count of the most-counted species by month and state. Project FeederWatch is a joint effort of The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada.
