Israel-Palestine Conflict News Highlights (October 8): Gunmen from Hamas, the ruling militant group in Palestine, carried out a rampage in southern Israeli towns on Saturday, firing thousands of rockets by air, and infiltrating these towns by foot, marking the deadliest day of violence in Israel since the Yom Kippur war half a century ago. Tel Aviv retaliated by launching killing deadly airstrikes in Gaza, ushering in a full-blown war in the region. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of a “long and difficult” conflict ahead, assuring that the "enemy will pay an unprecedented price."
What is the death toll so far? As the battle continued for second day on Sunday, several Israeli media outlets reported that the death toll from Hamas' attack on Israel had risen to 600, and as per Palestine's health ministry, at least 370 Palestinians lost their lives so far in retaliatory air strikes by Israel, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, at least 2,000 have been wounded so far amid the escalation of tensions between Israel and Palestine. Israel Defense Forces International Spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht recorded an update message on Sunday, calling Hamas' attack 'their 9/11'.
Where does the situation stand currently? Israeli bombardments are ongoing in several areas around the Gaza Strip, with the Israel Defense Forces still targeting terrorist targets in Gaza. Meanwhile, tensions are also spiraling at the Israel-Lebanon border, with both countries exchanging artillery and rocket fire. The Israeli military said one of its drones struck a Hezbollah post in the Har Dov area on the border. This came after Hezbollah, which is an armed camp backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for a rocket and artillery attack on the Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms and said that it was "in solidarity" with the Palestinian people. Senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine even said his group's "guns and rockets" were with Palestinian militants.
