Israel: Life in the company of bomb shelters and iron dome

It’s a modest looking system in olive green. Called the iron dome, it’s Israel’s best protection against rockets frequently rained on it by the Hamas in the Gaza Strip to its South and the Hezbollah from Lebanon and Syria on the north.

It was very much in action on Saturday when Hamas launched an all-out attack on Israel. An air defence system developed by Israel Aerospace Industries and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the iron dome has been helping to spot and intercept every projectile, be it a rocket or a mortar, fired into its territory since 2011.

Speaking to the Express last November, Lt Col Jonathan Conricus (retd), a military diplomat of Israeli Defense Force (IDF), who once served as a combat commander for the Gaza Strip, says the dome has intercepted over 3000 projectiles in the last 10 years.

Explained | Who are Hezbollah, and why has their presence raised concerns of escalation?

Hezbollah, whose name means ‘Party of God’, is a Shiite Islamic militant organisation from Lebanon. The think tank Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has described it as “The world’s most heavily armed non-state actor, with a large and diverse stockpile of unguided artillery rockets, as well as ballistic, antiair, antitank, and antiship missiles.”

In modern history, Lebanon was under a French mandate until 1943 and after it ended, power was divided into various religious groups, with posts such as Prime Minister and President of the country reserved for people of particular religious denominations.

Hezbollah originated during the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), which was a result of “long-simmering discontent over the large, armed Palestinian presence in the country”, according to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

Amid tense ethnic and religious divisions, Palestinian refugees’ arrival from 1948 onwards – with the creation of Israel as a state for Jewish people – added to the tensions. Their presence also led to Israeli forces invading southern Lebanon in 1978 and again in 1982 to expel Palestinian guerrilla fighters.

Explained | What is Hamas, history of Palestinian militant group

Hamas is the largest Palestinian militant Islamist group and one of the two major political parties in the region. Currently, it governs more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The organisation, however, is also known for its armed resistance against Israel.

The group was founded in the late 1980s, after the beginning of the first Palestinian intifada, or uprising, against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip — the Jewish state had captured the two Palestinian territories after winning the 1967 Israeli-Arab War.

Hamas as a whole, or in some cases its military wing, was designated a terrorist group by Israel, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, among other countries.

China calls on Israel, Palestine to immediately end hostilities to protect civilians

China on Sunday called on Palestine and Israel to immediately end the hostilities, exercise restraint, and remain calm to protect civilians to avoid further deterioration of the situation.

China is deeply concerned over the current escalation of tensions and violence between Palestine and Israel, and calls on relevant parties to remain calm, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in response to questions on the fierce conflicts between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip resulting in massive casualties on both sides.

The spokesperson said the recurrence of the conflict shows once again that the protracted standstill of the peace process cannot last.  The fundamental way out of the conflict lies in implementing the two-state solution and establishing an independent State of Palestine.

The international community needs to act with greater urgency, step up input into the Palestine question, facilitate the early resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel, and find a way to bring about enduring peace, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the spokesperson as saying.

China will continue to work relentlessly with the international community towards that end, the spokesperson added.

China this year has stepped up its diplomacy in the Middle East and brokered a surprise deal between arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran in March to end their hostilities and restore diplomatic ties.

The Beijing-brokered detente between Iran and Saudi Arabia came after a bitter rivalry between the two influential Middle Eastern countries which had destabilised several countries in the region including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Bahrain. (PTI)

Israel’s military says Hamas has taken hostages

Hamas militants have taken Israeli soldiers and civilians as hostages, the Israeli military said Saturday. The comments from Israel’s top military spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, confirmed some of Israelis’ worst fears since the assault began. Residents of Israeli border towns had told broadcasters that gunmen were moving door to door, looking for civilians and both Hamas and Islamic Jihad, another small militant faction in Gaza, had issued statements claiming to have Israeli captives.

In addition to Hagari’s remarks, video verified by The New York Times appears to show several Israelis being taken hostage by Hamas militants in the Be’eri kibbutz, just under 3 miles southeast from the border with Gaza in southern Israel. In the footage, at least five people with their hands behind their backs are being led on a road by armed men on foot and on motorcycles.

Where the group ended up is unclear, but reports from Israeli news outlets suggested that up to 50 hostages were being held in a dining hall in Be’eri. Those details have not been confirmed by the Times, although Hagari said Be’eri was one of two locations inside Israel with ongoing hostage situations.

Video posted to the messaging app Telegram earlier Saturday and verified by the Times showed armed militants crouching and taking up positions outside buildings in Be’eri. Some people have also posted appeals on social media asking for help locating friends and relatives from Be’eri and the surrounding areas who have not been heard from since Saturday morning local time.

Jewish diaspora mourns attack on Israel, but carries on by celebrating holidays

The Jewish diaspora awoke to horror Saturday in what was supposed to be among the most festive times on the Jewish holiday calendar.

The attacks by the militant group Hamas came after the end of Sukkot, a weeklong celebration to commemorate the harvest season and the time Jews lived in the desert after being freed from slavery in Egypt. It also came as Jews in the United States were gearing up to celebrate the holiday of Simchat Torah, which marks the beginning of a new annual cycle of the reading of the scrolls and is celebrated in Israel a day earlier.

At synagogues around the globe, the attacks brought a somber tone. Rabbi Felicia L Sol opened the morning at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City by telling congregants of the devastating toll from an Hamas attack that came from the air, from the sea and from the land.At a time that was supposed to be filled with joy, so many were instead entering “the holiday knowing that we can’t possibly celebrate in the same way that we would if obviously this hadn’t happened,” she said.

The day, she said, would go on “with less melody” as congregants joined her in “praying that things will be resolved, that those who are wounded will heal and for all the pain that already exists that we’ll find our way through.”

The incursion during Simchat Torah in Israel revived painful memories of the 1973 Mideast war practically 50 years to the day, in which Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism and a time of atonement and forgiveness. “I think that’s often been the case in these wars, that Israel often gets attacked on a holiday or Sabbath.” said Jack Rosen, president of the American Jewish Congress. “And, so I don’t think that’s an accident.”

The attack drew condemnation from Jewish communities and organizations spanning from Miami to Vancouver. The Jewish population in the United States was estimated at 7.5 million in 2021 by the Pew Research Center, with significant communities in the New York and Los Angeles areas.

Maxim Jacobs, 48, said the mood was mournful during Saturday morning services at his synagogue in New Jersey, with worshippers worried about family in Israel. But he expected a festive evening celebration for Simchat Torah. He said the rabbi told congregants other than traveling to Israel to help defend the country, being joyous is how people can carry on.

“We need to get closer together, have joy, tell the terrorists they won’t get us down,” Jacobs said. “We will go on as Jews.”

At Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, New York, worshippers opened their service Saturday both welcoming the arrival of the holiday and mourning the attack.

“We are holding joy and sorrow at the same time as we often do in Judaism,” Associate Cantor Danielle Rodnizki said. (AP)

Israel-Palestine Conflict: Backdrop of surging violence

Amidst a backdrop of escalating violence between Israel and Palestinian militants, tensions have intensified in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. In this region, where limited self-rule is exercised by the Palestinian authority, there is opposition from Hamas, which seeks the destruction of Israel.

The West Bank witnessed clashes in various locations on Saturday, as Palestinian youths engaged in stone-throwing confrontations with Israeli troops. Tragically, four Palestinians, including a 13-year-old boy, lost their lives. In response, Palestinian factions have called for a general strike on Sunday.

Meanwhile, within Israel itself, political turmoil has been brewing, with the most right-wing government in its history attempting significant reforms within the judiciary system.

At least 480 Israelis and Palestinians dead; Hamas says it has taken several Israeli captives

Gunmen from Hamas carried out a deadly rampage in Israeli towns on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least 250 Israelis and the abduction of numerous hostages, marking the deadliest day of violence in Israel since the Yom Kippur war half a century ago.

In response, Israel launched devastating retaliatory strikes, resulting in over 230 casualties in Gaza. “We will take mighty vengeance for this wicked day,” PM Benjamin Netanyahu said. He characterised Hamas as an enemy that targets mothers, children, and the elderly in their homes, emphasising their brutality and disregard for human life, news agency Reuters reported.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the assault that had begun in Gaza would spread to the West Bank and Jerusalem. In a speech, Haniyeh highlighted threats to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque, the continuation of the blockade on Gaza and Israeli normalisation with countries in the region, as per Reuters. "How many times have we warned you that the Palestinian people have been living in refugee camps for 75 years, and you refuse to recognise the rights of our people?"

Israel has the right to defend itself and its people, full stop. There’s never a justification for terrorist attacks and my administration’s support for Israeli’s security is rock solid and unwavering.’’

Biden made clear in a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “we stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support," according to the White House. Terrorism is never justified. Israel has a right to defend itself and its people,” Biden said in a statement that also warned “any other party hostile to Israel” against “seeking advantage in this situation.” Washington's support for “Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering,” the president said. His Pentagon chief said the U.S. was committed to helping Israel to “protect civilians from indiscriminate violence and terrorism” and with its defense needs.
