It’s one Giant leap for mankind.
Former New York Giant grid great Michael Strahan is set to apparently become the tallest person ever in space when he takes off on a Jeff Bezos Blue Origin flight next month.
The 6’5’’ “Good Morning America’’ co-anchor will be one of six people to soar past the Earth’s atmosphere Dec. 9 as part of Bezos’s latest space crew, the company announced Tuesday.
According to Guinness World Records, the current record for the tallest person in space is a tie between 6-foot-4 former US astronauts Jim Wetherbee and James “Ox” van Hoften. That’s actually the height ceiling for the International Space Station.
Representatives for Blue Origin declined comment to The Post on Strahan’s apparent record-breaking flight or whether the company is making any special accommodations for him in the rocket’s capsule.
A Blue Origin spokeswoman only pointed to a “GMA” video that shows Strahan trying out a model of a rocket-ship seat.
“Oh, this is comfortable,” Strahan says in the video. “I feel like I’m at my barber about to get my edge up.”
The video also shows former astronauts Dr. Nicholas Patrick, Blue Origin’s flight director, and Kevin Sproge, the company’s head of commercial astronaut training, strapping Strahan into the chair.
“We didn’t design it for folks with your shoulders,” one of them quips as they take measurements of Strahan in the seat.
Later in the video, Strahan tries on his Blue Origin astronaut uniform, which he calls a “perfect fit.”
Strahan will be joined by Laura Shepard Churchley, the eldest daughter of Alan Shepard, who was the first American to fly to space, as guests on the flight, Blue Origin said in a statement.
Four other passengers are paying for their seats. Blue Origin did not disclose how much they shelled out.The four customers include venture capitalist Lane Bess and his son, Cameron, as well as deep-pocketed investor Evan Dick. Angel investor and CEO of Voyager Space, Dylan Taylor, is also paying for a seat on the flight.
“Lane and Cameron Bess will become the first parent-child pair to fly in space,” Blue Origin said in a release.
It’s the first time Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket will carry six astronauts to space, operating at full capacity.
It’s the rocket’s third crewed flight sent to space this year.
In July, the rocket’s first crewed flight carried founder Jeff Bezos to space — making the Amazon founder the world’s wealthiest astronaut, even as he lost his title as world’s richest man to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Bezos was joined by his brother Mark and Oliver Daemen, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate from the Netherlands, as well as 82-year-old space pioneer Wally Funk — who made history becoming the oldest woman to ever soar into space.Last month, Blue Origin launched another set of passengers, including William Shatner, who famously played Captain Kirk in the original “Star Trek” TV series, into space.
Blue Origin’s flights last about 10 minutes as they soar just beyond an altitude of 66 miles.
Despite Blue Origin’s recent high-profile launches, the company has been mired in controversy ever since a group of 21 former and current employees accused the company of fostering a “toxic” and sexist work environment that’s even pushed some employees into having suicidal thoughts.
Notably, one of the few named former employees from that group, Alexandra Abrams, appeared on “Good Morning America” rival “CBS Mornings” for her first interview about the allegations.
