NYCFC are moving on up.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams officially announced Wednesday that a new stadium for the New York City Football Club will be erected in Willets Point, Queens, near Citi Field and Flushing Meadows.
“We are building a 100 percent privately financed Major League Soccer stadium,” the mayor said at a press conference in Queens. “It would be New York City’s first soccer-specific stadium … and a permanent home for the 2021 MLS Cup champions, NYCFC.”
The stadium will be built in conjunction with an affordable housing project that includes 2,500 homes and a hotel with 250 rooms.
“This is the right place and the right time to finally build a new soccer stadium worthy of New York City and fit for the NYCFC, alongside an impressive amount of affordable housing,” City Planning Commission Chair Dan Garodnick said in a statement. “As we work to build an even more dynamic and equitable city, Queens and Willets Point are leading the way.”
The city’s release said the project is expected to create 1,550 permanent jobs and 14,200 construction jobs.
The stadium will have a 25,000-seat capacity and is slated to cost $780 million.
“New York City Football Club is proud to stand with Mayor Adams, Councilmember Francisco Moya, and union brothers and sisters to announce our privately financed soccer-specific stadium in Queens,” NYCFC vice chairman Marty Edelman said. “Our club has been investing in New York City for over a decade, and we are eager to invest these funds to help build a new community for our first team — our dedicated fans and our great city.”
The franchise was founded in 2013 and has been playing the majority of its games at Yankee Stadium. The project is being developed by Queens Development Group, a joint venture between companies owned by the former Mets owners, the Wilpon family and Saul Katz, and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.
The Post reported this week that the new stadium is expected to open by 2027.
