The second installment of Netflix’s “Harry & Meghan” documentary dropped Thursday, bringing with it another wave of bombshell claims from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Throughout the second half of the series, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, break down in detail the mistreatment they claim they endured from the royals, including their strained relationships with Prince William and King Charles III and Meghan’s own struggles with mental health, her devastating miscarriage — and much, much more.
Here are the biggest shocks from episodes four, five and six.
Harry and Meghan became too popular for the royal family to handle
A friend of the Duke and Duchess, Lucy Fraser, spoke of how a trip the pair took to Australia was where things went south and their popularity down under became a threat to the royal family.
“The issue is when someone who’s marrying in, who should be a supporting act, is then stealing the limelight or is doing the job better than the person who was born to do this —that upsets people,” Harry boldly claimed.
Things also took a turn the day after an event held at Buckingham Palace. Even though the event was attended by every single member of the royal family, it was Meghan whose face was splashed across the front pages the next morning.
Harry recalled how upsetting it was at the time for Meghan to draw attention away from the rest of the family.
“She was like, ‘But it’s not my fault.’ And I said, ‘I know.’ And my mum felt the same way,” Harry recalled.
Meghan added: “I was still under the delusion that if it was in a tabloid, no one believed it,” before recalling how a member of the public told her: “What you’re doing to your father is not right.”
“It was the first time that I went, ‘Oh my God, people actually believe this stuff,'” she said. “My entire center was rocked to its core.”
William betrayed Harry
Harry blasted his brother for betraying his trust — claiming he was heartbroken when Prince William broke a promise they made to each other that they would never trade stories to the press about other royal households.
“William and I both saw what happened in our dad’s office and we made an agreement that we would never let that happen to our office,” Harry said.
“I would far rather get destroyed in the press than play along with this game or business of trading and to see my brother’s office doing the same thing that we promised the two of us would never, ever do — that was heartbreaking.”
Meghan was suicidal
Harry opened up about how he regretted his response to Meghan telling him that pressure from the royal family made her feel suicidal during a January 2019 charity event at the Royal Albert Hall.
Harry admitted he met the admission — which made headlines in March 2021 after Meghan disclosed her struggles during an interview with Oprah Winfrey — with a lackluster response.
“I was devastated, I knew that she was struggling — that we were both struggling — but I never thought that it would get to that stage. I felt angry and ashamed. I didn’t deal with it particularly well. I dealt with it as institutional Harry as opposed to husband Harry,” he said.
“What took over my feelings was my royal role. I had been trained to worry more about ‘What are people gonna think if we don’t go to this event? We’re going to be late.’ Looking back at it now, I hate myself for it,” Harry said.
King Charles and Prince William screamed at Harry during a meeting about the Sussexes’ move to the US, and ultimately caused a ‘wedge’ between the brothers
Prince Harry said it was “terrifying” to have his brother, Prince William, “scream and shout” at him during a meeting about the Sussexes splitting from the royal family.
In the final installment of Harry and Duchess Meghan’s Netflix docuseries, he detailed asking for a “half in, half out” agreement, where he and his wife would have their own jobs but still do some work in support of the Queen.
However, during a family meeting to discuss their options, “it became very clear very quickly that goal was not up for discussion or debate.”
While Harry insisted he never “blindsided” his grandmother with a sudden announcement that he and Meghan were going to leave the royals and move to Canada, he insisted that what followed felt like an attack on him.
“It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father saying things that just simply weren’t true, and my grandmother quietly sit there and sort of take it all in,” he said in the show.
Throughout the latest episodes, Harry heavily hinted that his brother persistently tormented the couple, and ended up “bullying us out of the family.”
To his shock and disappointment, Harry later found out his brother had put out a joint statement denying he had bullied the couple.
“I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that,” he said, adding he later called Meghan about the upsetting situation, which caused her to “burst into tears.”
“The saddest part of it was this wedge that it created between myself and my brother.”
Meghan tried so hard but it ‘wasn’t good enough’
Meghan teared up over how “hard” she worked to “fit in” before stepping back from her royal duties in January 2020.
While leaving England, Meghan claims a man overseeing the plane’s crew took his hat off and knelt next to her and shared his appreciation for “everything [she] did for [the] country,” Meghan recalled.
Meghan remembered how that made her feel because “it was the first time that I felt like someone saw the sacrifice, not for my own country, for this country [the UK]. It’s not mine.”
After the plane landed, Meghan said she “collapsed” into the arms of one of the royal security guards who had been with the couple through it all, and began to weep.
“I tried so hard,” she recalled saying. “And he goes, ‘I know you did. I know you did, ma’am.’ And that’s the piece that’s so triggering ’cause you go, and it still wasn’t good enough, and you still don’t fit in.”
Meghan the ‘organism’
In the fourth episode of the jaw-dropping docuseries, Meghan recalled how the couple’s private secretary — who had worked for the Queen for almost 20 years — compared new additions to the royal family, like the Duchess, to a foreign “organism.”
The secretary apparently told Meghan the royal family was like a fish, “swimming perfectly, it’s on the right current and then one day this little organism comes in.”
“This foreign organism and the entire thing goes [squeals] ‘What is that? What is it doing here? It doesn’t look like us, it doesn’t move like us. We don’t like it, get it off of us.'”
According to Meghan, the secretary then told her the royals would “soon see that it’s stronger, faster — even better, with this organism a part of it. It will be hard at the beginning for them to adjust to this new thing, but then it will be amazing.”
Meghan then seemed disappointed to add, “And I was really hopeful that it was true.”
Meghan blames rift with her dad on the media
In conversation with a producer, Meghan said the two were close and spoke “several times a week,” but that things began to go awry “when the media got involved.”
“After the wedding, my dad starts doing these interviews about mostly me. It was incredibly painful. And the world is watching this drama play out. And then he started criticizing the royal family. But it was very embarrassing for the family. It was a problem that needed to be solved, and they wanted me to make it stop,” she said.
Through the pain, Meghan reached out to Her Majesty to update her on the issue and ask what she should do.
“Ultimately, it was suggested by the Queen, the Prince of Wales [Charles], that I write my dad a letter. And I’d gone to great lengths to get that letter to my dad discreetly.”
“The letter made its way to the media,” she said.
Meghan became palace’s scapegoat for everything
Meghan’s friend Lucy Fraser said the Duchess “became the scapegoat for the palace” and a way for the royal family to avoid attention on stories they found put them in a bad light.
“They would feed stories on her, whether they were true or not, to avoid other less favorable stories [from] being printed.”
Meghan agreed, saying, “You would just see it play out. Like, a story about someone in the family would pop up for a minute. ‘Gotta make that go away.’”
Tyler Perry stepped in when royal family became abusive
Tyler Perry famously let Harry and Meghan stay in his $18 million Los Angeles mansion when they first fled to the US in 2020 even though he’d never met the couple before.
It was revealed in the docuseries that after seeing the slew of negative stories in the press about Meghan and her father, Thomas Markle, amid what’s been dubbed “Megxit,” he reached out to the pair.
“She was afraid of them destroying her, or going crazy, or them making her think she was crazy,” Perry recalled. “I saw my mother be abused for years, I knew the symptoms. I knew what it was like.”
“Everyone’s like, ‘Tyler, how dare you compare this to the abuse of your mother?’ This woman was abused. And so was he. To use the institution to try and do all the things a batterer would do, like ‘We’re gonna cut off the money. We’re gonna not leave you security. We’re gonna do all those things to make you comply and come back.'”
Perry added: “And for both of them to have the wherewithal to say, ‘I don’t give a damn if it’s the palace. I’m out of here,’ I applauded that.”
Harry blames the press for causing Meghan’s miscarriage
Meghan previously opened up about suffering a miscarriage in July 2020, and her friend Abigail Spencer described the devastating moment she found out about it after visiting the couple at their Montecito home.
Abigail recalled how Meghan was “in a lot of pain,” then “she was holding Archie and she just fell to the ground.”
Meghan describes: “I was pregnant, I really wasn’t sleeping. The first morning that we woke up in our new home is when I miscarried.”
Over footage of Harry carrying Archie up steps in the garden of their home, the Duke then says he believes all the negative press contributed to the tragedy.
“I believe my wife suffered a miscarriage because of what the [Daily] Mail did. I watched the whole thing,” Harry stated. “Now, do we absolutely know that the miscarriage was created, caused by that? Course we don’t.”
He continued: “But bearing in mind the stress that caused, the lack of sleep, and the timing of the pregnancy, how many weeks in she was, I can say from what I saw, that miscarriage was created by what they were trying to do to her.”
Palace’s poor reaction to Oprah interview
Following the explosive interview the pair gave with Oprah in 2021, Harry suggested the palace began what he called “institutional gaslighting.”
“Sitting down with Oprah was a reaction to what had happened that year,” Harry said, while Meghan said the interview took place because “people just genuinely didn’t understand why we left.”
He said he thought it would mark “the beginning of our year of transition — which, it turns out, was anything but a transition. It was just a beating.”
“I can’t think what my mom went through all those years ago by herself. To see the institutional gaslighting that happens is … It is extraordinary,” Harry said, baffled by it all.
Harry found going back for Prince Philip’s funeral hard and believes the family have misinterpreted why they needed to leave
Harry detailed how hard it was to return to England for his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral in April of last year.
Upon his return, it became painstakingly obvious he failed to see eye to eye with his brother, Prince William, and their father, King Charles III, about why he and his wife had to leave the country and their royal duties behind.
“None of us really wanted to have to talk about it at my grandfather’s funeral, but we did,” he said.
“It was hard. Especially spending time having chats with my brother and my father, who were very much focused on the same misinterpretation of the whole situation,” he said.
“And I’ve had to make peace with the fact that we’re probably never gonna get genuine accountability or a genuine apology,” he said, noting, “My wife and I, we’re moving on. We’re focused on what’s coming next.”
