Carlos Correa’s $350M Giants deal hits sudden snag over ‘medical concern’

There is suddenly a hiccup regarding Carlos Correa’s megadeal with the Giants.

The team suddenly postponed a Tuesday news conference, in which they were set to introduce Correa, 28, as their new shortstop, due to a “medical concern,” The Associated Press reported. According to the AP, “a medical issue was flagged during Correa’s physical,” and the team and player are waiting on test results.

Correa and the Giants had previously agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract, the fourth-largest contract in MLB history in terms of total money.

The Giants were originally set to introduce Correa on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET, but the press conference was called off three hours prior without an explanation.

The Mets showed late interest in Correa before he agreed to the deal with the Giants.

Correa played in 136 games for the Twins in 2022 after seven seasons with the Astros, slashing .291/.366/.467 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs.

San Francisco agreed to a deal with the two-time All-Star after missing out on Aaron Judge, who re-signed with the Yankees on a nine-year, $360 million contract. The Yankees officially announced Judge’s return on Tuesday.

Correa was part of a class of four big free-agent shortstops. Trea Turner signed an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Phillies; Xander Bogaerts signed an 11-year, $280 million with the Padres; Dansby Swanson joined the Cubs on a seven-year, $177 million deal.
