Liverpool reject verbal offer for Salah from Saudi Pro League

Liverpool reject verbal offer for Salah from Saudi Pro League

Liverpool have rejected a verbal offer from the Saudi Pro League to sign Mohamed Salah.

The proposal, worth in excess of £100million plus substantial add-ons worth up to £150m, was given no consideration and turned down immediately.

It was an approach made on behalf of Al Ittihad during an amicable call to Liverpool director Mike Gordon on Thursday night.

The Anfield club, however, reiterated the 31-year-old is not for sale and consider the case closed.

That view is not shared by the Saudis, though, who are expected to maintain a strong interest.

Salah signed a new three-year contract last summer, which made him the highest-paid player in Liverpool history on around £350,000 per week.

Salah, who scored 30 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season, was recently promoted to the club’s leadership group by manager Jurgen Klopp.

He has featured three times for Liverpool so far this season, scoring in the home win over Bournemouth last month.

Jonny Evans is set to sign a one-year contract at Manchester United to keep him at the club for the 2023-24 season.

The 35-year-old centre-back had signed a short-term deal with United for pre-season, having been training with the club's under-21 squad after his contract with relegated Leicester City expired.

It is as yet unclear whether Evans will be registered and available to feature against Arsenal on Sunday, if required.

United are short on defensive options with Raphael Varane set to be sidelined for a number of weeks and Luke Shaw, who was frequently utilised at centre-back last season, also set for an extended spell out with a muscular injury.

Evans made 198 appearances for United across eight seasons between 2007-08 and 2014-15.

Rangers centre-back Leon King will not go out on loan before tonight’s deadline.

Several English League one clubs had late discussions about taking the 19-year-old for the season but he will remain at Ibrox.

The situation is expected to be re-assessed in January with King has yet to play for the senior side this season.

He made 23 appearances last year and was one of the youngest players to be involved in the Champions League group stages last season but he finds himself down the pecking order behind Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Ben Davies.

It is also understood that there are unlikely to be any more incomings at Rangers today.

Joao Palhinha is travelling to Germany in anticipation of a move to Bayern Munich — though his transfer depends on Fulham finding a replacement before tonight’s deadline.

Bayern are interested in Palhinha as a defensive midfield option, after agreeing to let Ryan Gravenberch leave for Liverpool.

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi, meanwhile, is having a medical ahead of his move to Fulham but is not seen as a potential replacement for Palhinha.

Fulham rejected an offer in the region for £45million ($57m) from West Ham in July for Palhinha, who joined the Craven Cottage side for €20m last summer.

The differing deadlines may yet impact Bayern’s potential deal for Palhinha — Bundesliga clubs only have until 5pm BST (12pm ET, 9am PT) to complete their deals, six hours fewer than their Premier League counterparts.

Hull City are aiming to finalise a deal for Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton.

A deal was agreed in principle last week for the 20-year-old to move but was put on hold with Liverpool anxious over their amount of midfield cover.

However, the imminent arrival of Ryan Gravenberch at Liverpool has led to Morton being able to leave.

It will be a straight loan without an option to buy with all parties now working to complete the paperwork.

Morton has recently returned to training after four months out with a foot injury picked up while on loan at Blackburn Rovers last season.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have been looking to offload Lenglet all summer and he did not feature at all for the club during pre-season.

He spent the previous campaign on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and made 35 appearances in all competitions for the north London club.

Nottingham Forest have had a breakthrough in negotiations for Ibrahim Sangare of PSV and put a provisional deal in place — to be sealed if Brennan Johnson’s move to Tottenham goes through.

While Spurs edge closer to finalising Johnson’s transfer, Forest have been simultaneously negotiating a move for Sangare, the Ivory Coast international midfielder.

Sangare was always Forest’s top target, as The Athletic revealed six weeks ago, after being identified by the club’s talent-spotters a year ago. Sangare, 25, has been offered a significant pay rise to his current salary and, as it stands, a deal worth upwards of £30million is ready to happen as long as Johnson’s transfer is completed.

Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, has been haggling with Evangelos Marinakis, the Forest owner, over Johnson’s transfer. Talks have advanced and the two clubs are close to agreeing a financial package that could ultimately be worth in the region of £50 million.

Brentford, long-term admirers of Johnson, have made one last push for the Wales international but, financially, it is out of their reach and they have reluctantly had to accept Spurs are a bigger club with more appeal.

Manchester United’s director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, has flown to Italy to try and complete a deal for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat.

We revealed on Wednesday that United had seen a €2million loan bid for the Morocco international turned down, and no agreement has yet been reached.

Discussions continue over a deal for Amrabat, with the 27-year-old keen on a move to United.

Fiorentina’s preference is for a permanent sale, while a loan with an obligation is also an option. They value the player at €35m.

Hargreaves, a former executive at Adidas, was appointed to his role at United in March and began work this summer.

Ibrahima Konate and Thiago will miss Liverpool's match against Aston Villa on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

Konate sat out last weekend's victory over Newcastle due to a muscle problem sustained against Bournemouth, while Thiago has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hip injury.

Curtis Jones is fit to return following an ankle problem.

“No, Ibou will not be ready,” said Klopp.

“Curtis is back in training fully. Thiago started training with the team and then had a little setback, so we have to slow down there a little bit.

“It’s not cool for him, it’s not cool for us but it’s how it is. Thiago will use the international break to be up to speed. I’m pretty sure that should be hopefully enough for him.”

Man City complete Nunes signing from Wolves

Man City complete Nunes signing from Wolves

Manchester City FC

Manchester City have completed the signing of Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 25-year-old has signed a five-year deal, keeping him at the club until 2028.

The Athletic reported yesterday that City and Wolves had reached a final agreement on a new €62million (£53.2m, $67.6m) fee for the midfielder.

“The opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I simply couldn’t turn down," Nunes said.

“I learned so much during my season at Wolves and I’m excited to continue improving in the Premier League, a division which brings the best out of me."

City moved for Nunes in a bid to strengthen their midfield after their efforts to secure West Ham United's Lucas Paqueta was derailed by an FA investigation over potential betting breaches.

Guardiola's side have also lost Kevin De Bruyne to a hamstring injury, which required surgery that could see him spend up to four months out.

Real Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Reinier Jesus has joined Serie A side Frosinone.

The Athletic reported yesterday that the two clubs had agreed on a deal for the 21-year-old to join the club on a season-long loan.

The Brazilian, who joined the club in Janaury 2020, had interest from Girona in previous weeks after a new deal collapsed at the start of the summer. Las Palmas and Alaves also showed interest.

There will be no option to make the deal permanent inserted in the loan deal.

Real Madrid are next in action against Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow.
