Senator Jacky Rosen is adding her voice to a petition drive for a ballot initiative that would enshrine access to abortion in the state constitution.

Nevadans For Reproductive Freedom are circulating the petition.

Given that Rosen's seat could play a crucial role in determining control of the U.S. Senate, her support for abortion rights serves as a national safeguard against any potential threats to them.

"Sam Brown, my likely opponent, he has a record. We're not going to let him muddy the waters with that record," said (D-NV) Senator Jacky Rosen.

Abortion-rights is a key issue for Rosen and other Democratic candidates in close races nationwide.

"Sam Brown, who moved here from Texas, can go back. If he likes those laws, he can go back to Texas. Here in Nevada, we don't want that," said Rosen.

The Rosen campaign alleges that Sam Brown has an anti-abortion record. We contacted the Brown campaign seeking a response to Rosen's call for Brown to sign the petition, but received no answer to our specific question.

However, earlier this year, Brown went on the record saying he does not support a federal abortion ban. He thinks the decision needs to be left up to individual states.

Brown revealed in an interview with NBC News' Natasha Korecki that his stance on abortion has been influenced by his wife's experience with the procedure.

"There is at least a woman who is really going through something that might be one of the most challenging things in her life, and shame on us if we allow the narratives and the positioning to miss the fact that she was doing that alone," said Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Sam Brown.

Nevadans For Reproductive Freedom initially proposed a ballot measure that would protect access to all reproductive care services in Nevada, such as IVF, infertility treatments, vasectomies, and more. However, a Carson City District Court judge dismissed the first petition because its language was deemed too broad and violated the "single subject rule" that applies to most laws in Nevada.

Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom appealed the decision to the Nevada State Supreme Court, where they won. However, the case was delayed, and signatures could not be gathered for about a month.

Subsequently, they submitted a second ballot proposal that solely focuses on protecting access to abortion as a fundamental right in the state constitution. The proposal has been cleared and now Rosen is calling on all Republicans to sign the petition to secure the basic right.

"I am challenging people to sign up to protect women's freedom. I don't think Sam Brown, Jeffry Gunter, or any of them want any stranger sitting in their doctors' offices making the difficult decisions they have to make as a family," said Rosen.

Nevadans For Reproductive Freedom has shared that they have successfully gathered around 187,000 signatures. This number more than fulfills the 103,000 signatures required to get the initiative on the November ballot. To showcase their popularity, their goal is to reach 200,000 signatures by the June 26 deadline. Additionally, this will help ensure that they are covered in case there are any issues with verifying the signatures with the Secretary of State.
