The company is riding a surge of interest in baking during the pandemic.

One of the Portland-area's most recognizable national brands is on a hiring push amid growing demand for its products during the pandemic.

Bob's Red Mill is looking to hire 89 workers in roles including administration and operations as it rides a surge in people baking while at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, the company said in a news release. The number represents an 11 percent increase in the workforce of the Milwaukie-based maker of baking products.

"Over the past six months, Bob’s Red Mill employees have been all hands on deck 24 hours, 7 days a week to mix, mill, package and ship unprecedented volumes of product across the country, all the while navigating strictly enforced safety and social distancing protocols," according to the company.

Among the openings listed on its website are jobs for social distancing monitors. Like many other large food processing facilities in Oregon and nationwide, Bob's Red Mill was the site of an outbreak of Covid-19 earlier this year.

The company said it immediately isolated affected employees and began contact tracing at the facility. The Oregon Health Authority said the most recent onset of the virus at the site was July 23.

Oregon's most recent unemployment numbers improved from 10.4 percent in July to 7.7 percent in August, but joblessness is still well above the 3.4 percent level of a year ago.
