Eternals screenwriter Kaz Firpo recently clarified questions about Kurt Russell's character in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 after the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to rewrite the definition of "Celestial."
"We talked about it at length, but it's one of those things where I think that maybe [Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3] will have something to say about it," Firpo told The Direct about whether or not Russell's Ego the Living Planet is actually a Celestial. "...Ego's a really fascinating character, whether he's lying or not, that's a question…"
Fans will recall that in Guardians 2, it was revealed Ego was Peter Quill's biological father, and that the alleged Celestial being had reproduced with various species across the galaxy. However, it's established in Eternals that no other Celestials have a human form and that they aren't focused on taking over the universe.
"I think that you've seen the Celestials now in our film, what they are, what they're capable of, the fact that they are truly as large as planets, give birth to suns, and they're immortal space gods -- even more than our tiny little immortal space gods," Firpo continued. "So I think it's going to be something that we're going to continue to get to explore a little bit."
He also pointed out that, as far as MCU is concerned, the Eternals have yet to meet Ego. "They don't even know who he is. Was he an imposter?" he added. "I don't know, but I'm excited to see James Gunn's Guardians 3 as much as you are."
During the same conversation, Firpo explained that he'd love to include Galatcus as the villain if the MCU moves forward with an Eternals sequel. "Galactus is an amazing, amazing character, and villain," Firpo said. "We are, you know, obviously setting the stage for intergalactic, cosmic, megalith confrontations, especially when you kill a space god -- and then the space god comes and kidnaps you and plans to judge Earth, I think the door is very much open for world-eating villains."
Notably, while Eternals producer Nate Moore recently confirmed there are currently no plans for an Eternals sequel, Firpo told CBR he thinks there is a lot more story to tell. "I think it's just an incredibly rich universe, for which there's just so much more," he said. "Yeah, if we're lucky, it'll be a trilogy of very special stories."
Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals is in theaters now. Meanwhile, Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 recently started filming and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 23, 2023.
