  • Diamondbacks' Kevin Ginkel: Hit with blown save

Ginkel allowed a run on two hits in one inning Monday. He struck out one batter and blew a save chance during the loss to the Cubs.

Ginkel was tasked with closing out a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning but couldn't finish things off. He eventually let the tying run score on a wild pitch and the Cubs would go on to win in 11 innings. The 30-year-old had converted three straight saves since blowing his first opportunity of the year April 5. Ginkel owns a 3.24 ERA with a 10:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Fans five in no-decision

Kelly yielded a run on three hits and two walks over five innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out five during the loss to the Cubs.

Aside from a solo homer by Michael Busch, Kelly turned in a standard solid outing. It was Kelly's shortest start of the year but he's now allowed two or fewer runs in each of his first four appearances in 2024. The veteran righty also set a new season high by forcing 13 swinging strikes. He'll carry a 2.19 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be in San Francisco this weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Defense becomes issue

Alexander leads all shortstops with minus-6 outs above average, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Geraldo Perdomo's knee injury presented an opportunity for Alexander, and while the infielder has hit well, his fielding could cost him starts. He had miscues during the team's road trip in Atlanta, which prompted a meeting with manager Torey Lovullo, who reassured the shortstop that he loves his game but there's work to do. Infield coach Tony Perezchica is confident in Alexander's range but emphasized the need to make the routine plays. Thus far, Alexander hasn't let the defense affect his offense (.286/.359/.457).

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Set for another bullpen session

Sewald (oblique) will throw a second bullpen session Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Sewald threw 18 pitches in his bullpen session Saturday, which was his first since being placed on the 15-day IL with a Grade 2 left oblique strain. It's unclear what the next step will be after Tuesday's session, but Sewald will presumably eventually advance to throwing live batting practice before heading out on a rehab assignment.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Avoids injury

Carroll injured his left wrist after colliding with teammate Jake McCarthy while converging on a flyball Sunday but stayed in the game, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. He finished out the game, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Carroll was down on the ground for a bit before jogging off the field. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo confirmed no X-rays were needed, and that Carroll would be in Monday's starting lineup against the Cubs.

  • Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Tallies three hits in win

Walker went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

All three of Walker's hits went for singles, though he jumpstarted the Diamondbacks' five-run fifth inning with a leadoff base hit. Walker is seeing the baseball well early on, slashing .300/.417/.467 but has not recorded an extra-base hit since April 2 and currently owns a .167 ISO.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Swipes first bag of season

McCarthy went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

McCarthy was involved in a five-run fifth inning for the Diamondbacks, doubling home Joc Pederson before eventually scoring on a base hit from Corbin Carroll. McCarthy wound up reaching on a two-out base knock the following frame and stole second before the inning concluded for his first theft of the year. The 26-year-old is known for his elite base stealing, so it was encouraging to finally see him active on the basepaths after tallying 49 steals in 198 games over the last two seasons. McCarthy is now slashing .276/.300/.379 with four RBI, four runs and a 1:9 BB:K in 30 plate appearances this year.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Blanks Cardinals in win

Gallen (3-0) threw six shutout innings in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Gallen continued his excellent start to the season with his second scoreless outing in his last three starts. The Cardinals were able to scatter four hits against him and their only threat came in the second with bases loaded and one out, but Gallen was able to escape without any harm by striking out Brandon Crawford and getting Mike Siani to ground out. Five of his seven strikeouts came from his knuckle curve, as he registered 11 whiffs on the afternoon. He's allowed one run or fewer in three-of-four starts so far and boasts an excellent 1.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 22 innings. He'll look to keep things rolling his next time out on the road against the Giants.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Receives first day off of season

Suarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

The Diamondbacks haven't indicated that Suarez is nursing any sort of injury in the aftermath of Saturday's 4-2 win, so the veteran third baseman is likely just getting a maintenance day. Jace Peterson will step in at the hot corner while Suarez rests for the first time in 2024 after starting at third base in each of Arizona's first 15 games while hitting .259 with two home runs and 12 RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Resting Sunday

Moreno is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Moreno looks to be getting a routine day off after he caught the first two games of the series while recording a pair of base hits across seven at-bats. Tucker Barnhart will take on the catching duties in the series finale.

  • Diamondbacks' Kevin Ginkel: Records third save

Ginkel earned a save against the Cardinals on Saturday with a perfect inning of work.

Ginkel needed just nine pitches (five of which were strikes) to set down the Cardinals in order in the ninth frame. Since blowing his first save opportunity of the campaign April 5 against Atlanta, Ginkel has since converted each of his past three chances. Over those three outings, the right-hander hasn't allowed a run while yielding just one hit and posting a 4:2 K:BB over three innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Effective over six frames in win

Nelson (1-2) earned the win over St. Louis on Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six-plus innings.

Nelson picked up his first victory and first quality start of the campaign with easily his best outing so far. The right-hander pitched into the seventh inning having thrown just 76 pitches but exited after giving up a single to Masyn Winn leading off the frame. Nelson gave up five runs (four earned) over 2.2 innings in his season debut April 1, but he's looked much better since then, surrendering four runs across his subsequent 11 frames.

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 4-2 win over St. Louis.

Gurriel delivered a game-deciding three-run homer in the sixth inning. He had earlier singled in the first inning to extend a hit streak to seven contests, during which he has gone 11-for-30 (.367) with a home run and eight RBI. The blast was the fourth of the season for Gurriel, who went deep in each of the first three games of the season.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Throws bullpen session

Sewald (oblique) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Sewald threw 18 pitches in what was his first bullpen session since being placed on the injured list in late March. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was unsure of the next steps but believes another bullpen is likely. The club will want to see how the right-hander responds Sunday before moving forward.
