Cubs' Hector Neris: Allows run but secures save
Neris allowed a solo home run but still managed to secure the save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Astros. He struck out one.
Neris started the frame by allowing a home run to Jose Altuve, but he rebounded to retire the next three batters and earn his second save of the season. With Adbert Alzolay out of the closer's role following four blown saves, Neris figures to see plenty of end-game opportunities in the near future for the 15-9 Cubs. And if the veteran pitches well, he could hold onto the job for the rest of the season, which would certainly boost his fantasy value.

Cubs' Dansby Swanson: Sets tone with home run
Swanson went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Astros.
Swanson got the Cubs going early, hitting his big blast with two outs in the first inning to set the tone for the rest of the game. The shortstop, who is up to three home runs now for the season, has been off to a bit of a slow start overall with just a .235 batting average. However, Swanson will continue to see regular playing time, and he should be a strong fantasy asset the rest of the way.

Cubs' Miguel Amaya: Hits bench Wednesday
Amaya is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros.
Though he'll give way to Yan Gomes behind the dish Wednesday, Amaya seems to have edged ahead of the veteran on the depth chart at catcher. Amaya started in four of the previous five games and owns a 302-point edge in OPS over Gomes for the season (.772 to .470).

Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Throwing off mound this weekend
Hendricks (back) will throw a bullpen session this weekend in Boston, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.
The Cubs will map out a plan for Hendricks' rehab based on how he feels during and after the bullpen session. Hendricks was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain. Given his 12.00 ERA in five starts this season, the team might elect to give him ample time on a rehab assignment with the hope that he can get back on track upon returning from the IL.

Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Joins major-league roster
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Crow-Armstrong will be called up from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
The 22-year-old will join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for Cody Bellinger (ribs), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Crow-Armstrong has hit just .203/.241/.392 with a 24:3 K:BB over his first 19 games at Iowa this season, but he could still see ample action in center field in Bellinger's place if manager Craig Counsell wants Crow-Armstrong's plus defense in the lineup. Mike Tauchman is also a candidate to see reps in center field.

Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Lands on IL with rib fractures
Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Bellinger has been placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right rib fractures, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Bellinger was removed from Tuesday's 7-2 win over the Astros with what the team had labeled as a right rib contusion, after initial X-rays had returned negative. However, after Bellinger was sent in for a CT scan earlier Wednesday, he was found to have suffered two fractures, and he'll now be forced to miss at least the next week and a half while he heals up from the injury, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. The Cubs called up Pete Crow-Armstrong from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move, and he could end up serving as the primary replacement for Bellinger in center field if Counsell wants to prioritize defense over offense.

Cubs' Mike Tauchman: Clubs pair of homers
Tauchman went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and a solo home run during Tuesday's 7-2 win over the Astros.
Tauchman entered Tuesday's game homerless on the year, a surprising fact considering his monstrous performance. He tagged J.P. France for a three-run shot in the first frame and followed up the long ball with a solo shot in the eighth inning. Tauchman has collected multiple hits in three of his last six games, batting .450 with six RBI and five runs scored during that stretch.

Cubs' Jordan Wicks: First quality start of 2024
Wicks (1-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out four.
Wicks got through five innings for the first time all season Tuesday, picking up his first win in the process. However, he set a season low in strikeouts, bringing his K/9 from 12.7 to 11.0, and he surrendered his second long ball of the campaign in the fifth inning to Jake Meyers. Wicks is lined up to close out a two-start week Sunday at Boston.

Cubs' Yency Almonte: Nabs four-out save
Almonte picked up the save Tuesday against Houston, recording a strikeout over 1.1 perfect innings.
After manager Craig Counsell announced Sunday that Adbert Alzolay was no longer the Cubs' closer, Almonte filled that role Tuesday. While Almonte's the first Cub with a save since the announcement, Hector Neris, who got a save in Game 2 of Saturday's double-header, and Mark Leiter, who Almonte replaced in the eighth, could be part of what seems to be a short-term closing committee.

Cubs' Cody Bellinger: X-rays negative
X-rays on Bellinger's ribs came back negative Tuesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Manager Craig Counsell said Bellinger is still dealing with quite a bit of soreness, so the Cubs will wait to see how he feels Wednesday before determining any sort of return timeline. Alexander Canario entered Tuesday's game as Bellinger's replacement and could see extra reps in the outfield should the 2019 NL MVP have to miss time.

Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Removed from game
Bellinger was removed from Tuesday's game against the Astros due to a right rib contusion, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Bellinger ran into the outfield wall while attempting to catch a fly ball in the fourth inning, and he was later seen holding his right side in the dugout. The Cubs opted to pull him from the game ahead of the seventh frame, and an update on the outfielder's status will likely come following Tuesday's contest.

The 26-year-old was called up as expected Tuesday and will immediately make his way into the starting nine. Michael Busch has earned an everyday role at first base with his hot start to the season, so Mervis is likely to see most of his playing time at designated hitter, especially while Seiya Suzuki (oblique) remains sidelined.

The Cubs placed Hendricks on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Hendricks will be out of the Cubs rotation for at least the next couple weeks while he recovers from the injury. With Justin Steele (hamstring) perhaps on track to beat him back from the IL, Hendricks may not have a rotation spot waiting for him when he's ready to go. The veteran right-hander has posted a 12.00 ERA over five starts this season.

Cubs' Garrett Cooper: Jettisoned from 40-man roster
The Cubs designated Cooper for assignment Tuesday.
Cooper is slashing a solid .270/.341/.432 this season, which mirrors his career-long batting line. The Cubs have decided he's no longer a fit for the roster, though, and will replace him with Matt Mervis, who will be called up from Triple-A Iowa. Cooper should have no trouble landing a gig elsewhere in short order.
