  • Marlins' Jhonny Pereda: Optioned to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Pereda to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Pereda served as Nick Fortes' backup while Christian Bethancourt (illness) was sidelined, but he's no longer needed with Bethancourt back in tow. The 28-year-old went hitless in five plate appearances in what was his first stint in the big leagues.

  • Marlins' Christian Bethancourt: Activated from injured list

The Marlins activated Bethancourt (illness) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Bethancourt wound up missing the minimum 10 days with a viral illness. He is in Wednesday's lineup in Atlanta, catching and batting ninth. Jhonny Pereda was sent down in a corresponding move.

  • Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Set to open Wednesday's game

Sanchez is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The 25-year-old right-hander will be making his first MLB start since Oct. 8, 2020, when he faced Atlanta in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. After missing most of the ensuing three seasons while recovering from shoulder problems, Sanchez has been healthy thus far in 2024 while operating in a relief role for Miami, producing a 6.14 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 7.1 innings. He hasn't recorded more than six outs in any of his seven appearances, so Sanchez shouldn't be expected to work more than two or three innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. If Miami doesn't add another pitcher to its active roster ahead of Wednesday's contest, Kyle Tyler -- who has yet to make his 2024 MLB debut but covered 3.1 innings in his last appearance for Triple-A Jacksonville on April 14 -- would appear to be the most logical option to work behind Sanchez in bulk relief.

  • Marlins' Trevor Rogers: Hit with third loss

Rogers (0-3) took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta, surrendering five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out four batters.

Facing an Atlanta lineup that sports a staggering .824 OPS, Rogers only gave up two unearned runs through the first five innings but was promptly pulled after allowing a sac fly and a two-run homer during the sixth. The 26-year-old southpaw holds a 4.10 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through his first five starts and will still be in search of his first win of the year during his next scheduled outing versus the Nationals on Monday.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Restarting rehab assignment

Garrett (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch side session Tuesday and is scheduled to pick up his rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Jacksonville, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The left-hander is ready to resume his rehab assignment after a bout of dead arm slowed the progress in his return from a pinched nerve in his left shoulder. Garrett threw 86 pitches in his previous rehab outing April 12 and is scheduled to throw about 60 pitches or four innings Friday. The 26-year-old seems likely to require an additional rehab start after Friday before making his season debut for Miami.

  • Marlins' Josh Simpson: Set for elbow surgery

Simpson will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair the ulnar nerve in his left elbow, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

It's expected to be around three months before Simpson will be ready to pitch in games again, so this will put him out at least until after the All-Star break. The southpaw initially suffered the injury during spring training and made an unsuccessful attempt at resting and rehabbing the injury before eventually opting for surgery.

  • Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Only one strikeout in no-decision

Weathers did not factor into the decision Monday against Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out one.

Weathers was looking steady against the dynamic Atlanta offense until yielding a two-run blast to Travis d'Arnaud in the fourth inning. The Miami lefty has been surprisingly effective in his first five starts this year, pitching to a 3.16 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23:12 K:BB over 25.2 innings. Weathers is scheduled to make his next start against the Nationals at home.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Throws bullpen session

Garrett (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Garrett is ramping back up again after he was briefly shut down following his second rehab appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville on April 12 due to a bout with dead arm. The left-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list prior to Opening Day with a left shoulder impingement, but he looks to have moved past that injury and will simply need to build up his pitch count before he's deemed ready to make his 2024 debut for the Marlins. He'll likely need to complete at least one more minor-league rehab start prior to being activated from the IL, though it's unclear when he'll be ready to resume game action.

  • Marlins' Jake Burger: Making improvements

Burger (intercostal) will be evaluated soon to determine whether he can begin hitting, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

It's been a week since Burger landed on the injured list with a left intercostal strain, and the infielder is feeling better. He would likely need to start with some low-impact hitting drills initially before progressing to batting practice and eventually rehab games. It's still too early to determine a potential timetable for Burger's return.

  • Marlins' Christian Bethancourt: Starts up rehab assignment

Bethancourt (illness) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday and went 3-for-13 with a double and a stolen base across his first three games with the affiliate.

Bethancourt was placed on the 10-day IL on April 15 after coming down with a viral illness, but his ability to return to game action a few days later suggests that he's tracking toward a minimum-length stay on the shelf. Once Bethancourt is activated, he'll likely be part of a timeshare with Nick Fortes behind the plate.

  • Marlins' Roddery Munoz: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Munoz to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday.

As expected, Munoz's stay with the big club lasted just one day, as Miami designated him as its 27th man for its doubleheader with the Cubs on Saturday. Munoz started the second game of the twin bill in what was his MLB debut, covering five innings and striking out seven while allowing two earned runs on two hits and one walk en route to taking a no-decision in the Marlins' 5-3 loss. He'll step back into the Jacksonville rotation and should remain one of the top options for a promotion to the big club if the Marlins should require a spot starter at any point.

  • Marlins' JT Chargois: Starts up rehab assignment

Chargois (neck) struck out one over a scoreless inning in his rehab appearance Sunday for Triple-A Jacksonville.

Chargois missed most of spring training due to neck spasms before he opened the season on the 15-day injured list, so he'll likely require at least a few more appearances in the minors before the Marlins are comfortable activating him. Once he's added back to the 26-man active roster, Chargois is expected to work in a setup or middle-innings role out of the Miami bullpen after registering a 3.61 ERA and 1.25 WHIP while collecting one win, one save and four holds over 42.1 innings in 2023.

  • Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Picks up first hold

Hoeing gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless sixth inning Sunday to record his first hold of the season in a win over the Cubs.

The 27-year-old right-hander has been one of the few bullpen arms for Miami to have success early in the season, and Hoeing sports a 1.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB through 14 innings. Sunday's hold was only the second of his career, but he could work his way into more consistent high-leverage spots if he continues to get the job done and the likes of Andrew Nardi (9.31 ERA) and Anthony Bender (8.31 ERA) continue to struggle.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Notches fourth save

Scott struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Sunday to record his fourth save of the season in a win over the Cubs.

The southpaw reined in his control issues for at least one appearance, firing eight of 11 pitches for strikes as he carved up the top of the Cubs' order. Scott's 3.38 ERA through 10.2 innings masks his struggles -- he has a 10:12 K:BB and an 0-3 record, although he's converted four of five save chances. With most of the rest of the Marlins' bullpen also off to shaky starts to the season, Scott is being given every opportunity to turn things around, and as yet a change at closer for Miami doesn't seem to be in the works.

  • Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Knocks first homer

Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Cubs.

Sanchez opened the game's scoring with a massive 460-foot solo shot in the second inning. It was his first long ball -- and first extra-base hit of any kind -- in 2024. He began the season in a 7-for-42 funk but has collected multiple hits twice in his last three appearances. Sanchez now owns a .216/.259/.275 slash line through 18 games.
