  • Rays' Zach Eflin: Struggles in 2024 opener

Eflin (0-1) went 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on six hits and one walk during Thursday's loss to Toronto. He struck out five.

Eflin was roughed up by the Blue Jays' potent offense, giving up solo home runs to George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero and Cavan Biggio. Most of the damage against Eflin came in the sixth, where he gave up five of his six earned runs. Eflin is set for another test to start 2024, with a matchup against the Rangers on tap for his next projected start.

  • Rays' Yandy Diaz: Lone producer in Opening Day loss

Diaz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI during Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

Diaz accounted for both of the Rays runs scored, going yard off Jose Berrios to lead off the first inning and driving in Rene Pinto on a sixth-inning double. After slashing .330/.410/.522 with a career-high 22 homers in 600 plate appearances during 2023, Diaz is well on his way to repeating -- if not exceeding -- those numbers in 2024.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: In right field Opening Day

Palacios will start in right field and bat sixth in Thursday's season opener versus the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The Rays' outfield is a bit banged up, and Palacios will get the first crack in right field in place of Josh Lowe (oblique). Palacios was acquired via trade from the Cardinals over the offseason.

  • Rays' Niko Goodrum: Added to 40-man roster and optioned

The Rays selected Goodrum's contract and optioned him to Triple-A Durham on Thursday.

Goodrum will get a spot on the Rays' 40-man roster after he was acquired from the Twins on Wednesday, but he won't be part of Tampa Bay's 26-man active roster for Thursday's season opener versus Toronto. The 32-year-old journeyman utility player has prior experience at every infield and outfield spot, so he should be a prime candidate for a call-up if the Rays' injury concerns continue to mount. Tampa Bay will open the season with five position players on the 10-day injured list.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Hits IL, will miss beyond 10 days

The Rays placed Lowe (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.

Though Lowe is dealing with a Grade 1 right oblique strain -- the most mild degree of strain -- he has yet to resume baseball activities since suffering the injury in mid-March and is on track to miss more than the minimum 10 days. According to MLB.com, Lowe will essentially need to complete a full spring training progression once he's cleared for activities, so at this stage, he's likely tracking for a late-April or early-May return. While Lowe is on the shelf to open the season, Richie Palacios, Harold Ramirez and Amed Rosario could all be in store for extra playing time in the corner outfield or at designated hitter.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Placed on administrative leave

Franco was placed on administrative leave Thursday through an agreement between MLB and the MLB Players Association under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The transaction removes Franco from the Rays' 40-man roster and is effective through June 1. The stay could end sooner than that if there are any developments in Franco's investigation or could be extended if there are none. Because he is on administrative leave and not the restricted list, Franco will be paid his $2 million salary.

  • Rays' Taylor Walls: Placed on IL

The Rays placed Walls (hip) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Walls is working his way back from last October's surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip. According to MLB.com, Walls has been hitting in the batting cage, fielding grounders and throwing during spring training, and he's set to meet with a doctor Monday to get a gauge of where he stands in his recovery from surgery. Since he'll need to go through a spring training-esque progression that likely includes a minor-league rehab assignment once he's cleared to intensify his baseball activities, Walls might not be ready to make his season debut until late April or early May.

  • Rays' Jonny DeLuca: Goes on injured list

The Rays placed DeLuca (hand) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

DeLuca fractured his right hand in early March and is expected to be sidelined until at least late April. He had been pegged as a short-side platoon outfielder before the injury and should be able to take hold of that role once he's healthy.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Officially placed on injured list

The Rays placed Aranda (finger) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Aranda is expected to be out until at least early May after having surgery March 21 to insert a pin in his fractured right ring finger. The 25-year-old had been slated to open the season as Tampa Bay's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, and he should eventually reclaim that role once healthy.

  • Rays' Jake Odorizzi: Headed to Triple-A

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that Odorizzi has been reassigned to Triple-A Durham to begin the season, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Odorizzi signed a minor-league deal with the Rays on March 15 and didn't have sufficient time to make a case for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but the organization isn't closing the door on him filling a starting role with the big club once he's fully stretched out. According to Cash, Odorizzi will make his first start with Durham on Tuesday, and the Rays will go "start-to-start" with him in the minors before deciding if or when he'll be called up. The 34-year-old Odorizzi owns a lifetime 3.99 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 1,253.1 innings in the majors, but his outlook is murky after he missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder.

  • Rays' Alex Jackson: Misses out on Opening Day roster

The Rays will reassign Jackson to the minors prior to Thursday's season opener versus the Blue Jays, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Among the internal options the Rays had at spring training, Jackson appeared well positioned to make the Opening Day roster as the No. 2 catcher behind Rene Pinto, but Jackson dropped a spot on the organizational depth chart after Tampa Bay acquired Ben Rortvedt from the Yankees on Wednesday. Unless he opts out of his minor-league deal, Jackson is expected to open the season as the primary backstop for Triple-A Durham.

  • Rays' Ben Rortvedt: Lands in Tampa Bay

The Rays acquired Rortvedt from the Yankees on Wednesday in a three-team trade involving the Marlins, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Rortvedt is out of options and wasn't going to make the Yankees' Opening Day roster. In Tampa Bay, he'll take over as the backup catcher behind Rene Pinto. Rortvedt isn't much of a hitter with just a .489 OPS over 71 games in the majors, but he will bring a good defensive reputation to the Rays.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Makes Opening Day roster

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that Shenton has made the Rays' Opening Day roster, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Shenton was optioned to minor-league camp earlier this month, but injuries to other players created another opportunity and he wound up making the team. The 26-year-old can handle the corner-infield and corner-outfield spots and could also be an option at designated hitter while Jonathan Aranda (finger) opens the season on the injured list. Shenton will be making his major-league debut whenever he gets into a game.

  • Rays' Niko Goodrum: Headed to Tampa Bay

The Rays acquired Goodrum from the Twins on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations, selected his contract from Triple-A Durham and optioned him to Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Goodrum had an assignment clause in his minor-league contract which allowed him to leave for a major-league deal elsewhere. The 32-year-old switch hitter is a good fit for a Rays club that likes to take advantage of versatility, but he'll report to their Triple-A affiliate for now.

  • Rays' Taj Bradley: Shifts to 15-day IL

The Rays placed Bradley (pectoral) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to March 25, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

The right-hander was shut down from throwing for two weeks after being diagnosed with a pectoral strain March 13, so the move to the injured list was expected. It's unclear where Bradley currently stands in his recovery, but he's likely to be re-evaluated soon. Even if the 23-year-old is cleared to resume throwing in the near future, he's likely to be sidelined for at least the first month of the season as he builds his arm strength back up.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Officially placed on injured list

The Rays placed Baz on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 25, with a right elbow injury, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Baz also dealt with an oblique injury this spring, but the plan was always to delay his season debut as he comes back from September 2022 Tommy John surgery. It remains something of a mystery as to when he will rejoin the Rays' rotation, but fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting him for at least the first month or two.

  • Rays' Jake Odorizzi: Pitching in Tuesday's game

Odorizzi will pitch in Tuesday's game versus the Tigers rather than a minor-league game Wednesday as initially scheduled, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The Rays decided Tuesday's contest would be a truer test as to how close the veteran right-hander is to being ready to pitch in a regular-season game with the big club. Odorizzi missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and will begin 2024 in the minors. However, if he looks sharp, he could join the Rays sooner rather than later, particularly since there is a need in the rotation with Shane Baz (elbow) or Taj Bradley (pectoral) out.
