Leaked iPhone 14 Pro CADs Reveal ‘Far More Curved’ Design

This article is more than 2 years old.

iPhone 14 leaks have already revealed that Apple is preparing some big upgrades for its next-gen iPhones as well as taking a few risks. And now we also know iPhone 14 Pro models will have a subtle, but satisfying, shape change.

Credit for the discovery goes to respected render artist Ian Zelbo (via AppleTrak), who discovered Apple plans to make the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max "far more curved" than current iPhone 13 Pro models. Moreover, the shape change is a fix for an existing iPhone problem that is subtle but — once spotted — something you cannot unsee.

"[There] is a quirk with the iPhone 13 Pro design," Zelbo explains. "The radius of the phone’s corners do not match the radius of the camera bump (obviously, an odd decision for a company like Apple, who is known for their cohesiveness)... Apple has rounded the corners of the iPhone 14 Pro significantly, finally addressing the odd look on the iPhone 13 Pro."

But that is only half of it: "In addition as the corners being more rounded, the corners of the screen are also far more curved," Zelbo notes. He also spells out why Apple has made this change: Apple’s supersized new iPhone 14 Pro camera bump: "if Apple kept the same radius from the iPhone 13 Pro, it would result in a very uneven looking device."

Zelbo made the discovery after studying leaked iPhone 14 Pro schematics and pointed out that similarly leaked iPhone 14 schematics show the non-Pro models will not make the same shape change. Why? Because they will stick with last year's older camera tech, just like they are also sticking with an older chipset.

And this is the dirty secret of the iPhone 14 range. The iPhone 14 Pro models will make head-turning changes to their features and design (including losing the notch), while the iPhone 14 and new iPhone 14 Max are essentially the iPhone 13 just with slightly more RAM.

The relatively affordable new iPhone 14 Max model should compensate for this in the eyes of many Apple fans, but there's no escaping Apple's plan to widen the gap between all its Pro and non-Pro hardware. And that will also be reflected in their higher prices.
