One Rhode Island city has given away hundreds of used Chromebooks to residents who have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

And there are still 1,000 available.

“The City of East Providence received the gently-used Chromebooks from the East Providence School Department. The Chromebooks were no longer being used and were decommissioned,” said City of Providence East Providence spokesperson Patricia Resende. “The School Committee gave our Community Development Office permission to take access of them and distribute them.”

“The Community Development Office has been been overseeing the program and has distributed the Chromebooks to residents through various local nonprofits,” added Resende.

According to the city, they received 2,500 Chromebooks, of which 1,455 have been given out so far. Of those, 655 were given out through the city’s vaccine clinics.

The Chromebooks are available to city residents with proof of residency, are provided once the vaccine is administered.

Incentives — and Numbers

Recently, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said he intends to enter into a contract provision with AFSCME Council 94 that would give $3,000 to state workers who get -- or have gotten -- the vaccine.

The Rhode Island GOP is criticized McKee's decision to give the financial bonuses as politics.

"Governor Dan McKee’s administration has reached a tentative agreement with Rhode Island’s largest union of state employees, which will give state employees two $1,500 bonuses who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. This agreement has not been disclosed to the public. One of these two bonuses being given in July 2022 during primary election season," said the GOP.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, as of Wednesday, 770,389 Rhode Island residents have completed the primary vaccine series of shots — good for 72.9% of the state.

East Providence, the state’s fifth largest city with nearly 48,000 residents, currently has a vaccination rate of 65.8%.

Children ages 5-11 became eligible for the vaccine in November.

To date statewide, 6,495 children between 5 and 9 have been vaccinated; 27,870 children have between 10-14, and 37,264 between 15 and 18.
