“Vaccination is the pathway out of masking in schools,” said Dr. Michael Fine, the former Rhode Island Director of Health, in an appearance on GoLocal LIVE on Wednesday.

Last week, both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) gave approval for the use of the Pfizer vaccine for 5-to-11-year-olds.

"Getting children vaccinated is the way to put masking behind us,” said Fine.

"You need to get 95% of school kids vaccinated -- as we do for every other vaccine that we require for school entry -- but once those kids are vaccinated and once we can get community transmission down I don't see any need for masking," added Fine.

As reported by the Rhode Island Department of Health, the transmission level of cases per 100,000 over a 7-day period has risen to 185.3 -- up more than 50% in the past week.

For children going to school in Rhode Island, there are ten vaccinations required to enter school. In addition, for children going to daycare, there are 12 vaccinations required.

Sooner Is Better and Key to Return to Normalcy

"The sooner [we mandate children to be vaccinated] the better. And, if we don't get it done by spring then shame on us. This has been burdensome -- nobody likes the masking thing and this is the opportunity to get rid of it. The way to do it is to get every kid vaccinated and all of us work together on community transmission -- both at the same time," added Fine.

He said it is the responsibility of the Rhode Island Department of Health to develop the regulations to require proof of vaccination for COVID in order to return to school.

"It can be done in about four months with the public's input," added Fine.

California has already made the requirement for children.
