Kohl's said it plans to change the layout of its stores, moving home goods and gifts to the front.

As Kohl’s Corp. continues to work to improve floundering sales in recent years, the Menomonee Falls-based company has announced that its latest answer is a new layout within stores.

The layout change reflects shifting priorities in what the store offers and how it hopes to be seen, the company said during its first-quarter earnings call.

Before the change happens, here’s what we know about the new-look layout:

New Kohl's layout will put home goods at the front of stores

Kohl’s said it plans to relocate home goods and gifts to the front of the store. It's an attempt to maximize the sales potential in those areas, which have been of emerging significance for the company in recent years.

Americana merchandise is a particular priority as holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July provide an opportunity for Kohl's to see immediate success with the increased emphasis on home goods.

Kohl's said it also plans to add more seasonal items, wall art, patio furniture, camping and outdoor gear, as well as add more space for pet products.

Kohl's checkout lines will be moved and self-checkout will be added

To create space for the new priorities, Kohl's said it'll consolidate its checkout lanes into one area, which will include more “impulse items.”

In a change similar to many other retail stores, Kohl’s also said that 250 stores will get self-checkout kiosks.

Layout change is the latest attempt to stop downsizing at Kohl's

Kohl's said it hopes a rejuvenated appearance featuring brighter store interiors will help to win over customers who continue to shop at the store — as well as those who have stopped in recent years.

With a new store set to open this fall in downtown Milwaukee, Kohl’s has maintained that major downsizing isn't in the company’s plan at the moment.
