Toby Fox has more talents than his name has syllables, and one of those talents is composing for video games — including his own, Undertale. And if you've heard any of the Undertale soundtrack, it's likely you'll have heard Megalovania, the bombastic retro-flavoured background music to a very important fight in the game. Here it is, because everyone needs to listen to Megalovania:
The song was originally composed for Toby Fox's Earthbound rom hack in 2008, and then repurposed for Undertale, but it was actually only made to replace the music Fox wanted to use — Megalomania, a boss track from niche Japan-only RPG Live A Live.
But Live A Live is about to be not-so-niche, as it was announced for the Switch on the Nintendo Direct on February 9th as an "HD-2D" remake, in the style of Octopath Traveler. Finally, almost 30 years after its release, we'll be able to hear Megalomania!

Dang, I really need to play Live A Live. I'm a huge fan of 16-bit RPGs that do interesting things, but this one kind of just slipped me by.
I think the Octopath-style graphics are cool and interesting, but I kinda wish the original Super Famicom 16-bit graphics were available too.
Trials of Mana had the best of both worlds in this regard, with both a translated 16-bit version and a full-on remake both being available on Switch...
Regardless, I'm definitely getting the remake.
Interesting. You can definitely hear the resemblance, but Megalovania is the better piece of music in my opinion. It's fun how a piece from a cult Japan-only RPG inspired such an ubiquitous song.
@EarthboundBenjy This one slipped past most Westerners as a Japan-only game. I am aware it's got a cult following and probably a fan translation, but that's also a super niche scene.

Live a Live OST is one of Yoko Shimomura's best works in my opinion
I heard of Live A Live years ago but didn't read much about it. Based on the Direct footage last night, it seems like one to get excited about.
I can definitely hear the resemblance between the two. Live a Live does look pretty cool, I might give it a shot.
okay, now I need to buy the remake of the game.
With Live a Live, Moon, and now Earthbound coming to Switch more people might see Toby is a dedicated talented guy but definitely not the most original. I like Undertale a bit but it always felt like a repackaged cross section of older cult RPGs.
Just heard of the game the other day, I'm going to have to give live a live a shot.
Well, it wasn't so surprising he'd heard of it.
He was an EarthBound fan, and one of the most famous EarthBound fans is Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin, who partly worked on the fan translation of the original version of this game.
(the ROM hacker Gideon Zhi pretty much dumped each scenario's script and handed it off to a different translator.
I'm guessing that, from what I've heard, the scenarios were mostly self-contained, it didn't really matter to much if a different person handled each script.
Though whoever got the caveman script probably got a real easy time.
I only played a little bit of the original version of the game long ago. I recall finishing the caveman and Chinese guy's stories, but then the ninja scenario's final boss beat me badly and I kinda stopped.
Toby Fox must of been ***** his pants during the direct then.
I like how the Battle Tower theme in Pokemon Sword and Shield was also insipred by "The baby is you"
