Leon County Schools to remain open Wednesday as Hurricane Ian moves toward Florida coast

Leon County Schools will remain open Wednesday as Hurricane Ian continues its path toward the west coast of central and south Florida.

The school district stated on Twitter that shelters will not be opening on campuses Wednesday, which allows school to remain open.

On Monday, LCS Superintendent Rocky Hanna said seven of the district's schools were ready to serve as shelters for evacuees if needed.

The district will continue to update the community on Wednesday, the tweet states.

Florida High will also remain open on Wednesday. FAMU DRS, however, will be closed Wednesday through Friday.

"The commitment of FAMU DRS is to create the safest environment for our Baby Rattler community," said Superintendent Michael Johnson in a letter to the FAMU DRS community. "Our top priority is to maintain the safety of all students, faculty, and staff."

Tallahassee still remains on the western edge of the cone of uncertainty, however, and could still see sustained winds between 30 and 40 mph and 3 to 4 inches of rain.

“The storm has tracked a little bit more to the south and east and kind of nudged in that direction over the last 12 to 24 hours,” said Kristian Oliver, meteorologist with the National Weather Service “That might shift our values down a little bit. It’s all track-dependent at this point.”

Jefferson County Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Florida State University canceled classes through this week and announced it would close campus Thursday and Friday. Florida A&M University followed suit with the same schedule.
