Usher Terry Raymond IV was born on October 14, 1978, in Dallas, Texas. He grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he sang in the church choir. When he was 12, his family moved to Atlanta, where his music career began.

Growing up he was in several talent shows. His performance on the popular “Star Search” competition show led to a recording contract with LaFace Records. Diddy was also mentoring him at this time.
