Veterans have welcomed the Queen’s decision to strip the Duke of York of his honorary military titles.

The titles included honorary colonel of the Grenadier Guards, one of the oldest and most senior infantry regiments in the British Army.

The role was said to hold emotional significance for the Queen as it was given to her on her 16th birthday in 1942 before passing to the Duke of Edinburgh 33 years later. Prince Andrew took it over from his father in 2017.

The prince, a former Fleet Air Arm helicopter pilot who flew in the Falklands conflict in 1982, is to lose several other honorary commands, including colonel-in-chief of the Royal Lancers, the Royal Irish Regiment, the Yorkshire Regiment and the Small Arms School Corps,
