A stroll after dinner has long been thought to clear the mind. Now research suggests that it can also improve blood- sugar control and reduce the chances of developing heart problems or diabetes.

Even a couple of minutes of walking after meals is enough to activate the benefits, according to a study published in the journal Sports Medicine.

Researchers from the University of Limerick drew together the results of seven studies that compared the effect of standing or walking after eating with the effect of remaining seated.

They found that standing was better than sitting but a short walk was superior overall. People who went for a light- intensity walk had lower blood-sugar and insulin levels than those who stayed sitting. Short standing-up breaks
