Grunge meets glamour—polished punk pieces that reimagine the trend

Punk fashion is about more than just Doc Martens and plaid shirts. The subculture originated decades ago as a form of rebellion among youth who were discontent with the society and its way of working. The clothes offered an aesthetic communication of this angst. After more than two years of living in a near dystopian world, fraught with political turmoil, and the pandemic, it’s only fitting, that iconic punk look has crept back onto the runways.

While most of 2020 and 2021 saw sweatpants and athleisure as the style choice for many, a wind of freedom is blowing through fashion with the return of neo punk. Its comeback can be characterised by an interesting juxtaposition of grit and glam. Leather corsets with delicate cutout details, sharp lapels with feminine puff shoulders and pearls paired with metal chokers. This time around the spirit of rebellion is injected with femininity. This version of punk, like the trend has always been, is an aesthetic rebellion against what fashion should look like with what’s going on in the rest of the world. The only rule to note? That there are no rules.
