As Republican senators gathered privately in one of many contentious meetings about their Ukraine-for-border deal last month, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) stood up and pointed his finger at the conference’s leader.

“You just want Ukraine funding,” Cruz angrily said, according to a senator in the room. “That’s what this is about for you. That’s why you negotiated a bad border deal — because you don’t really care.”
