West Carrollton Dollar General reopens after multiple code violations force closure

WEST CARROLLTON — UPDATE @ 10:30 a.m. (May 24):

Following a five-day closure due to multiple city code violations, a West Carrollton Dollar General location was allowed to reopen Tuesday after passing a reinspection, according to West Carrollton city officials.

The location at 25 West Alex Bell Road had been shut down by city code enforcement officers since Thursday for multiple safety violations including “gross overstocking of the shelves,” blocked exit doors, unpassable aisles, and other issues, Carl Enterman, Chief Code Enforcement Officer for the City of West Carrollton told News Center 7 Monday.

Following a fourth reinspection Tuesday morning, the store passed and was allowed to reopen, Enterman said. The business had requested reinspections three other times before Tuesday and failed the previous three, he said.

West Carrollton code officers will inspect the locations every two weeks going forward due to the previous issues at both Dollar General locations in the city. Within the last year the two West Carrollton Dollar General locations, on West Alex Bell and North Springboro Pike, had been shut down a combined eight times for similar code violations, Enterman said.

Code inspectors will allow some time for new product to be stocked if they spot a truck unloading new supplies when an inspection is planned, he said.

News Center 7 reached out to Dollar General public relations Monday with questions and seeking a comment on the issues involving the West Carrollton stores and the multiple shut-downs due to code issues. A company spokesperson acknowledged News Center 7′s email but did not issue a statement or provide answers to questions.

This story will be updated with new details as they become available.

FIRST REPORT (May 23):

This involves code violations including overstocked shelves, blocked fire extinguishers. and unclean conditions, Enterman said. The store also failed a re-inspection on Monday, he confirmed.

According to Enterman, when a store fails, they are given a correction order that cites all of the violations and shows what they need to do to reopen. The store can immediately reopen after they pass inspection.

Enterman says the issues have only been at these two stores and the city has not condemned any other business in the last year.
