A hepatitis A outbreak, connected to frozen strawberries, grew this week. However, at this point, 5 On Your Side found the risks in North Carolina remain lower than many other parts of the country.

There have been nine total illnesses connected to this outbreak, according to the FDA. All of those cases are on the west coast.

The expanded recall affects several brands of frozen strawberries sold at Walmart stores in 32 states and Costco stores in seven states, but North Carolina stores are not named in either of those specific recalls.

The only product that may have been sold in North Carolina are the frozen bags of "Organic Tropical Fruit Blend Pineapple, Bananas, Strawberries & Mango" sold at Trader Joe's stores nationwide. The bags are 16 oz and have UPC code 00511919. They would also have one of the following "Best Buy" dates:

According to the CDC, symptoms of hepatitis A usually appear two-to-seven weeks after exposure and can include yellow skin or eyes, low appetite, upset stomach, stomach pain, vomiting, fever, dark urine or light stools, diarrhea, joint pain or feeling tired.

Hepatitis A can lead to feeling sick for weeks or months and in rare cases, can cause liver failure and even death.

NCDHHS tells 5 On Your Side there are no reported cases of hepatitis A in the state, at this point.

The FDA says data they've collected links the illnesses to frozen organic strawberries imported from Baja California, Mexico and distributed by multiple brands.
