St. John’s ‘Enchanted Forest’ prom made for magical memories | Lifestyle

A week after St. John’s School Junior-Senior Prom, Luca Flores continues to savor the memories.

“I loved prom. Going with my friends, people whom I trust, was really fun and I was lucky to have this experience,” the junior said.

After not hosting a prom for two years due to COVID-19, St. John’s held one on April 2 at the Dusit Thani Guam Resort. “Our prom theme was Enchanted Forest, so the whole ballroom was decorated with trees and flowers. It was a very magical experience,” junior Cylia Wu said.

Nishka Dewan, also a junior, said she would be holding onto the photos, her dress and the memories for the rest of her life. “Being able to spend the whole night with my best friends was my favorite part.”

Wu at first was worried about putting herself and others at risk for COVID. “I was worried about dancing, because I thought that we would all be close together on the dance floor. But the administration said that masks were necessary for activities other than eating, so I was … assured.”

Wu and her twin sister, Bella, started preparing for prom days in advance. “The night before, me and my friends tried on our makeup on Facetime. We were all really excited and it was really fun to see everybody so glammed up!” Cylia said. On prom night, Wu and her sister did each other’s hair.

Flores started out the night at his friend’s house. There, he and “his boys” changed into their suits and styled their hair. “I wore a blue tux to prom that I had been given at a past birthday party. I was glad that it had fit me, and it was a very stylish tux, so I wanted my hair to look just as snazzy,” Flores said.

Flores and his friends then took photos before departing for the hotel. Arriving fashionably late, the group took even more photos before finding their seats. The prom committee, made up of juniors, had employed two photographers to take action shots during the event and had a photo booth.

The photo booth was one of Wu’s favorite activities. “Taking photos at the prom was important for me because it allowed me to have tangible things to remember the night forever.” Wu said that she wanted to capture the amount of effort her and her friends put in dressing up and in dancing.

Flores enjoyed the games, which included a musical chairs scavenger hunt and one where you had to find an envelope while wearing a blindfold. “They loosened everybody up and got everybody in the mood to dance” — his favorite activity of the evening.

“When you first get on the dance floor, everybody is nervous. People don’t dance how they want to because they’re embarrassed. But once everybody is in the groove of things, the dancing is crazy and exciting.”

Flores, his friends, and some of the seniors created a dance circle on a platform. Each member of the circle would take turns being in the middle to show off a move, and some of the teachers even joined in.

Flores cherished the opportunity to make memories before his senior year, especially given the lack of traditional school events the past two years. “Because of COVID, my grade hasn’t been able to take part in all the fun traditions that classes prior to ours had.”
