FromSoftware’s Latest As Told By Steam Reviews

It’s hard to overstate how popular the latest Souls-like game is. Elden Ring became Steam’s most played game at 760,000 concurrents on launch day, which was unprecedented for a FromSoftware game. It’s been nearly three weeks since the game launched, and interest hasn’t died down. The PC port of Elden Ring has 226,106 reviews as of publication and a respectable “Very Positive” rating. The game garnered positive reviews, but many players cited the instability of the PC port. Some advised people to wait for an official fix before purchasing the game.

Most of the positive reviews praised Elden Ring’s open-world design for being enjoyable and open to different kinds of playstyles. While players acknowledged the famed difficulty of the Souls-like genre, many seemed to think that the latest entry was an approachable entry point for newcomers.

First time with a Dark Souls type game and loving it. I am 52 so apparently it's never too late to get good.

If you rush you can make it the hardest Souls game you've ever played. If you take it a bit slower, it will be similar in difficulty to the old games. If you take it very slow and out-level content it also fits the bit more casual player, although don't think it will be easy. The open world and "questing system" are the new benchmark for the entire genre. For me it's one of the best games I've ever played. Opinion might change along the way as I am only half way, will update accordingly

A game that makes you mad but is good enough for you to keep playing

Game is bloody brilliant. They took the classic Dark Souls format and made it more accessible in 3 ways. First, there's more to do. More items, quests, and materials to collect means progression feels more meaningful. Second, the graphics are much prettier. Third and most important, the game feels easier. It's not *actually* easier, but the open world structure means you don't get stuck bashing your head against a really hard boss fight. If an encounter is too hard, you just go around it and find something else to do while you get stronger. You probably won't even attempt the first boss until you've hit a major power spike. This means less time head bashing and more time making progress and improving your character. Feeling stuck was one of the chief complaints I had about the Dark Souls series, and it seems like From Software has fixed that.

WARNING : This game can ruin other open-world games for you !!! ( especially games from Ubisoft)

Other reviews were filled with jokes, including its famous maidenless meme and “try fingers, but hole.” This is likely a nod to the various messages that players can leave each other in Elden Ring’s multiplayer mode.

Some treat Steam as their own personal Souls-like forum. One reviewer even posted a recipe for…cookies? Some multiplayer messages are helpful game tips (like Steam reviews!) while others are considerably…less helpful for completing the game. If any Kotaku reader would like to try actually baking these cookies and tell us how they turned out, we’d be grateful.

Despite the fun had in the reviews, many players struggled with constant stuttering and stability issues on the Steam version of Elden Ring. Some felt physically ill at the wildly fluctuating framerate, and others pointed out that a boss-heavy game like Elden Ring was frustratingly unsatisfying when hampered by random game freezes. When a single second can mean the difference between surviving to fight another day or losing all of your runes, inconsistent performance can be a game-breaking issue.

Unfortunate i have to give everyone a big warning before buying the game. The game is not well optimised at least for the PC, and while the frame rate in enclosed areas is very stable, it will constantly stutter in open areas, from which the game will have many, since as the trailers show, you will even be able to ride on this big worldmap. Especially when a Boss makes a special move. Since Elden Ring is a game where you have to dodge/react to the opponents attacks in under a secound, this makes Bossfights frustrating beyond believe and honestly kinda unplayable at least in my eyes. I dont mind having to try a boss over and over because i make a mistake, but constantly dying, because the game freezes for 1 secound so i couldnt see which type of attack the boss is throwing at me is not the kind of challenge i am looking forward to. I hope that one of the first Patches will fix the horrible stutter problems that the game currently has, and i am really sure that once the problems are fixed, that the game will be absolutly amazing. But as for now, if you are still thinking if you should buy the game or not, i would highly recommend to wait for a while.

Will not recommend until they fix the majority of performance issues, stuttering and crashing. I can run current gen games at 4K but I run elden ring at 1080p and can barely get a consistent fps higher than 40. Some areas (even in boss arenas) the game will drop to like 20fps and it really ruins the experience.

This game is absolutely fantastic and an instant classic... if played on PS5 or Xbox Series X. Unfortunately on PC it is an absolute trainwreck and I can't support PC ports in the shameless state this was released. The consistent stuttering and horrific performance are unacceptable for release day. Please try harder, From.

I cannot recommend the game right now, fps inconsistency and heavy stuttering are giving me headache and nausea. Such a shame, as it is probably one of the best games ever released ...

But even when the Souls-like game got frustrating for players, the community remains in incredibly good spirits about having their asses handed to them on a regular basis. One reviewer joked that they dealt with Elden Ring frustration by tidying their house, and that their house has never been so clean.

Out of pure frustration, I often get up and find myself doing some chore around the house. At least half of my play time is just being afk doing the dishes or loading the washer or dryer. My house is spotless now. Thanks Elden Ring. No ultrawide support. 9/10.

The note said "chest ahead" at the edge of a cliff with nothing in sight...there were plenty of bloodstains but they must've missed the jump... I had to be sure

Some players were having a spiritual experience with Elden Ring.

If you're ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exists at the same time as Miyazaki, the creator of greatest game of all time, Elden Ring.

The folks with hundreds of hours of gameplay logged into their Steam account, on the other hand, are very likely maidenless.

A Steam reviewer mentions playing over a hundred hours and a commenter points out that the game had only been released for two hundred hours.
