Marvel reportedly working on new game and IP with EA

Allegedly EA could be working on a brand new Marvel game. It is unknown at present which Marvel IP will be getting its own game, but fans can speculate over who could be making a gaming appearance in the future.

Marvel has had a number of success stories when it comes to video game adaptations of its famous comic book characters, just look at Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales. All three of these games are available in the PlayStation Plus Extra games list for PS Plus Premium and Extra subscribers. But according to a new rumour, maybe another Marvel IP will be joining the ranks of these three great games, and no, it isn’t Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

Update: No platforms were mentioned by the source and adjustments have been made correspondingly, though it is safe to assume — if the game exists and ever releases — PS5 would be a minimum.

Could this Marvel IP centre around iconic characters like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange?

There are so many Marvel characters who deserve their own video game

As reported by Tech4Gamers, over on the Xbox Era podcast, Nick Baker, a well-known industry expert, talked about Electronic Arts creating a brand new Marvel IP. However, he did not reveal much in terms of what that IP is or which EA studio could be working on the project.

“Out of nowhere, this new source sends me a DM the other day, saying: ‘Oi, EA’s making a Marvel game.’ I can’t [say more] — because he mentioned what it would probably be about (which IP it would be about) — and I can’t even give clues. I’m bad at giving clues without giving stuff away.”

No platforms were mentioned, but it is safe to assume current-gen is on the table. Nick Baker also notes he should have run the rumour by a few other sources before noting it in the podcast. It is also worth offering that since none of this has been officially announced by EA, so take with you some pinches of salt, regardless of if Baker is known for hitting the nail on the head more often than not.

If this information turns out to be true, Marvel could have another award-winning game on its hands, just like most of the recent releases — let’s just forget about Marvel’s Avengers, shall we? Seeing EA attached to the project is a little bit concerning, as in recent years they haven’t had the best track record when it comes to games — Anthem anyone? But let us not forget the success stories of It Takes Two and Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, proof that EA can still knock it out of the park.

It will be interesting to see which EA studio ends up working on this huge project if it is indeed real. EA Montreal or EA Vancouver could be possible candidates to take leadership of this unknown Marvel IP; however, it could be even more interesting if an EA studio like BioWare was to take the reigns. Imagine a Marvel game with the same deep lore and interactions that we got to see from the likes of Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Obviously, BioWare is super busy with the next Dragon Age game, which we now know is titled Dragon Age Dreadwolf and the next Mass Effect game, which everyone is just calling Mass Effect 4 for now. So the chances of BioWare working on this project are pretty low, but we can hope.

With so little information to go on, we are truly left in the dark. For now, all we can do is hope that EA makes some form of announcement in the near future. I won’t be holding my breath for that to happen any time soon. If this turns out to be true I would love to play a game all about Scarlet Witch, or, my favourite Marvel character ever, Elektra. That could be a decent R-rated heavy hitter from Marvel, just like the Deadpool PS4 game.

Marvel is currently at an all-time high in the film industry, with box office smash hits coming left, right, and centre. It makes sense that Marvel would want to capitalise on its success and keep pushing that momentum forward, so creating more video games is a fantastic idea. What do you guys make of this rumour? Which Marvel character would you like to see in their own game? Also, please tell me how much you love Garus in the comments below!
