What is epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a chronic noncommunicable brain disease that can be identified by repeated seizures, which are brief periods of involuntary movement in a portion of the body or entire body. These episodes are occasionally accompanied by loss of consciousness and control of bowel or bladder function. Epilepsy can also occur in childhood and can severely impact a child’s life. Some children with epilepsy have age-related epilepsy, which means their seizures will stop when they reach a specific age, whereas others may have seizures that last into adulthood.

Here’s what the expert says

Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, Consultant – Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad says, “Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical discharges in a group of brain cells. Such discharges can occur in different areas of the brain. They can range from momentary attention lapses or muscle jerks to severe and sustained convulsions. The frequency of seizures may vary, from less than one per year to several per day.”

“Many children with epilepsy and seizures may respond well to medication and lead normal and active lives. A seizure in a child can be caused due to a number of reasons such as an imbalance of neurotransmitters, brain tumour, strokes, or brain damage from any illness or injury. However, modifications in lifestyle majorly regulate the frequency of seizures,” he adds.

Develop regular sleep patterns

A consistent sleep routine is essential for children with epilepsy. Seizures can be triggered by sleep deprivation or abnormal sleep patterns. Setting up a bedtime schedule and making sure the child receives adequate sleep each night can help lower the risk of seizures.

Treating with proper nutrition

Proper water and a well-balanced diet are crucial for overall well-being. Dehydration increases the likelihood of seizures. Encouraging the child to drink enough water and eat a range of nutrient-rich foods can help their health. When some people miss meals, they get seizures. As a result, people with epilepsy should eat at the same time every day. Some people may prevent or reduce seizures by eating, taking medication, and sleeping at the same time every day.

Identifying the potential trigger points and avoiding them

Seizures can be caused by bright, flashing lights, sleeplessness, particular sounds, activity, skipping meals or medication, hormonal changes, stress, drug addiction, and alcohol. However, each person’s case is unique. Avoiding these trigger points can reduce the risk of seizures.

Exercising and physical activity

Exercise can be of great benefit to those suffering from epilepsy. Weight-bearing workouts such as running, lifting, walking, and lifting contribute to strengthening bones and increase muscles. People with epilepsy should exercise even more because some epilepsy medications can have an impact on bone health. Exercise also makes you feel healthier and less anxious.
