    Lifestyle briefs | Celebrate New Year’s Eve Eve with Playhouse Arts – Times-Standard

    Variety show

    Playhouse Arts is hosting a “New Year’s Eve Eve Extravaganza” Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Arcata Playhouse, 1251 Ninth St., Arcata.

    Tickets are $25 general admission and are available at PlayhouseArts.org or Wildberries Marketplace in Arcata, or to reserve a ticket call 707-822-1575 or purchase at the door.

    This variety show and dance party fundraiser will include short acts from over a dozen local performers, sketch comedy, musical performances, tap dancing, poetry and more.

    The list of Playhouse players include Jackie Dandeneau, David Ferney, Laura Muñoz, James Hildebrandt  and Melanie Schauwecker. Other performers will include Peggy Martinez, Tim Randles, James Zeller, Julie Fulkerson, Gwen Post, James Floss, Ken Lawrence, Doug Marcum, Ben Aldag, Tom Szantos, Melissa Hinz and more.

    After the variety show, stay for a dance party, with live music by the RLAD Quartet and guest singers. Specialty drinks will be available at the bar, as well as local beer on tap, fresh popcorn and chocolate chip cookies,

    The show features cabaret seating with tables and an open dance floor for the second half of the show.

    The purpose of Playhouse Arts is to use the arts as a tool to build a community that is inspired and empowered to work together for the common good. Arcata Playhouse is one of the nonprofit’s several venues and is used for live theater, music, variety arts, poetry, speakers, film showings and more.

    New Year’s Eve

    The Greater Trinidad Chamber of Commerce will present “A New Year for Trinidad” Dec. 31 from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at Trinidad Town Hall, 490 Trinity St., Trinidad.

    This festive event will feature live music from Heavens Taint and Soul Trip, hors d’oeuvres and a complimentary champagne toast. A cash bar will be available.

    Tickets for “A New Year for Trinidad” are $20 pre-sale or $25 on the day of the event. Purchase tickets in advance at BIT.LY/GTCCNYE.

    First responders

    Center Activities at Cal Poly Humboldt is offering an 80-hour “Wilderness First Responder Certification Course” from Jan. 5 to 14, which each session running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    This challenging course is designed to provide outdoor leaders, instructors, guides, rangers and travelers with the knowledge needed to deal with emergencies in remote settings. This class meets national standards for urban and extended care situations and is recognized by many agencies, schools and institutions. All levels of previous training are welcome.

    Successful course completion earns you a NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder certification. This certification course includes adult/child/infant CPR and AED, as well as the option to be Epinephrine Auto-Injector certified. EMTS will earn a Wilderness EMT certification. All certifications are current for two years.

    The cost of the course is $775 to $930, with a discount for enrolled Cal Poly Humboldt students.
