Lifestyle Directly Affects Fatty Liver, May Progress Into Cirrhosis, Cancer | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Ignoring liver health can invite many diseases – fatty liver, liver cirrhosis and even liver cancer. According to doctors, lifestyle has a direct effect on the liver, which removes the body’s dirt from and cleanses the blood. Ignoring liver problems can lead to serious complications.
A 55-year-old patient, who had diabetes, high cholesterol level and blood pressure, was first diagnosed with non-acholic fatty liver which progressed into liver cirrhosis. The doctors had to conduct liver transplant to save his life.
The highly complex procedure lasted for over 12 hours. The transplant was conducted on March 23 and post complete recovery, patient was discharged in a stable condition on April 7.
The patient, a resident of Nagaur district, was suffering from liver cirrhosis, a disease which gradually damaged his entire liver. Since last one year he had developed liver failure, with liver transplant being the only option to save his life. “As the patient was getting admitted multiple times with serious complications, we suggested early liver transplant with liver donation from a near relative. His daughter agreed to donate a portion of her liver,” said Dr Rahul Rai, liver transplant physician at a private hospital in Jaipur.
The doctors removed around 60% of the liver from patient’s daughter and implanted it into the recipient.Fatty liver, the disease in which fat builds up in the liver – has become prevalent among the population in the last few decades. Studies suggest that the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among the general population in India ranges from 9 to 53%.
Dr Surender Sultania, senior consultant, gastroenterology at a private hospital said that fatty liver may soon become prevalent among the non-alcoholic population.
Dr Ajay Bapna, cancer specialist at city’s private cancer hospital said, “It is important to recognise liver cancer symptoms like pain in the upper abdomen, swelling in the abdomen, yellowing of the eyes and skin, fever, tiredness, weakness, yellow or brown coloured urine, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, sudden loss of weight. If any of these symptoms are not cured for a long time, it is necessary to consult a cancer specialist.”
