Intel Confirms Meteor Lake CPUs Are Coming To Desktop PCs In 2024

Intel has confirmed that it will be bringing Meteor Lake CPUs to its desktop platform in 2024 amidst various cancellation rumors.

Intel Meteor Lake CPUs Are Coming To Desktop PCs In 2024, Confirms Intel EVP of Client Computing Group

The confirmation comes from an interview with PCWorld in which Intel’s Executive Vice President and general manager of the Client Computing Group said that Meteor Lake CPUs are coming in 2024. It looks like Meteor Lake CPUs are once again on the table to see the light of day on desktop PCs after various rumors and leaks hinted that the CPU family was canceled & the chipmaker would instead focus on Arrow Lake for its desktop CPU lineup. Following is the interview transcript:

[PCWorld – Mark Hachman] Q- Let me ask you, is there gonna be a Meteor Lake desktop?

[Michelle Johnston Holthaus – Intel EVP/GM of CCG] A – Desktop will come in 2024.

[PCWorld – Mark Hachman] Q- So you are confirming Meteor Lake desktop?

[Michelle Johnston Holthaus – Intel EVP/GM of CCG] A – Yes.

[PCWorld – Mark Hachman] Q – Whether or not you guys are returning to an era where there is gonna be a processor family for mobile and a seprate processor family for desktop but doesn’t sound like that’s the case.

[Michelle Johnston Holthaus – Intel EVP/GM of CCG] A – That is not the case. I want one processor family top to bottom for both segments, doesn’t everybody?

Intel Meteor Lake CPUs is very much a CCG (Intel Client Computing Group) chip so Michelle actually confirming that the product lineup is coming to desktop PCs is a huge deal. This also gives us a new perspective of how Intel will roll out its next-gen CPU platform which may include not one but two distinct product lineups in 2024.

The 1st Gen Core Ultra Meteor Lake CPUs will obviously be coming to mobile platforms such as the recently revealed laptops first starting the 14th of December so we can expect an unveiling of the new desktop parts by CES 2024 which would be less than a month away from Meteor Lake CPUs mobile launch.

Meteor Lake CPUs were previously expected to come in 6+8 configurations derived from its Meteor Lake-P siblings but whether those plans were changed and we get something new remains to be seen. The CPUs will be the successor to Intel’s 14th Gen and the last LGA 1700 socketed CPU family codenamed Raptor Lake Refresh.

So far, we have heard about the Intel 800-series platform which will be based around the LGA 1851 socket and deliver major I/O and platform enhancements to accommodate the Meteor Lake and next-gen Arrow Lake-S CPUs. Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPUs are planned for late 2024 so Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs would have some time to capture the market.

Regardless of the configs, the Meteor Lake-S CPUs will be a welcome update over the Raptor Lake Refresh lineup which doesn’t offer so much besides clock speed increases and a new Core i7 SKU. Meanwhile, Meteor Lake will offer new P-Core (Redwood Cove) & new E-Core (Crestmont) architectures along with new Arc Xe-LPG graphics which are really going to shake things up in the iGPU segment.
